Howdy,

Unknowingly my wife left the front door open while doing her gardening today. Yours truly was off at the motorcycle dealerhship, btw. She told me that while facing the house and working away on her knees, she noticed a shiny brown streak going back and forth in her peripheral vision for several minutes.
She turned to drink from her water cup only to see Lasker (our 4 yr. old red male) dutifully pacing our yard from side to side, seemingly guarding my wife's back! Meanwhile, cars streamed by. Lasker had every chance to run away or chase cars, but chose to guard his "mommy". In four years we've never made this mistake, but it's sure nice to know that our Doberman is so devoted and disciplined.

PS: I don't want to think what would've happened to our female Airedale in a similar situation! She's in canine heaven and was a wonderful pet until Cancer took it's toll at age 12.5

Toby accompanies me when I work on the land, staying close even when Reina and Russell go off for an explore. Several times he has warned me of people approaching and it is a fact I feel so much safer with him at my side or sitting close by. Luckily for me I live in a remote area where the only road is the one leading to my house and a few other farms so traffic is virtually nil.

So glad your boy stayed with his mum, but please, if you live near a road keep him indoors or on a leash, it only takes a split second for them to run out into that road as I know all too well when one of my previous dogs did it when we lived in the UK. One second he was by my side as I was loading him in the car, I thought it would be okay not to leash him as he was so obediant etc, next he was clear across the road. Jeepers did I have kittens that day. .

So sorry to hear of your Airedales passing, cancer sucks.

 to your Doberhero

Great news on Lasker, good boy never left Mom's side...loyal as a family lover.
Sorry to hear of Airedale, but bless her for being around family for 12.5 years...its never long enough.

Around here the 2 biggest distractions is the odd squirrel or a outside cat, luckly my puppy is not obsessed with birds.
What I do is train my dogs, to think of the little critters as "good babies"...same as I call her stuffies her "babies".
- so this morning our Kelly saw a young stray cat (from the bay window) walking across the road (along driveways) and with Dad talking calming and saying "kitty is a good baby" our puppy hackles didn't even go up and then she got me a stuffy (LOL) to hold and play with her
- last pee break their was a squirrel at the end of our street, Dad said "Kelly see the squirrel? - is a baby, Kelly likes her babies, good girl" and she remained calm on our front lawn

We got 11.7 good years out of our old girl, our Amy was always off-leash and she loved to lay down on the open driveway and sleep in the nice summer afternoons. She was a master at staying put on the property, and always knew Dad's wereabouts, a trait we worked on until she could be trusted under many distractions...once she even ignored a chipmunk that ran by her within a 3 feet distance from her...on his way to get a peanut from the bird feeder...the chipmunk didn't even detour around our dobe.
- when she was young, I trained her to sit and watch a baby bunny eating grass (with me) in out backyard many nights...used as a practice drill
- I told Amy, it was her baby bunny, and quitely praised her over & over...we could get to the bunny within 10 feet, before the 2 of us was spotted
