Since Guelph has stopped it's program for Dobermans (vet is on maternity leave) I've been thinking of getting a holter for myself.
If I were to get one, I would like to help out others, and help pay back the money I spent on getting one. How many of you would be interested in renting a holter from me?
Charge would be $50 plus shipping, unless you live in the GTA and can travel to get it, shipping charges will be waived.
I've been also thinking of getting into contact with the Doberman club of Ontario, and see if they would be interested in using it (free of course) or anyone fostering a Doberman can use it for free.
The holter I'm looking to get is refurbished, and it's a tape monitor.
I understand it is a diagnostic TOOL, therefore you need your dog to be seen by a vet on a regular basis, and this information will be passed on to those who will be using it.
I am also looking for someone who has set up a holter before, so they can show me how to do it (me current vet refuses to help). Or if anyone knows a vet who would help me set it up.
Not really helpful I suppose, but reading your post made me think... That's pretty shady that your vet refuses to help. I'd like to think my vet would help me (I'm pretty confident he would, I used to work for him), but if he wouldn't, I'd probably be psychically reading his ($$$) mind, and thinking about finding a different vet. I understand the need to run a business and make money, but if you are an established client, he/she should be happy with the money you already do spend on his services, supporting his establishment, and also that you are going above and beyond what a lot of dog owners would be doing to keep your pet healthy (which should be his overall goal as well). I'd like to think he should be willing to help you out with something like this. It's obviously not a prescription order, so what's it matter? (Besides the hundreds of dollars he would be making off of having you rely on him to complete the process...). I think it's great that people are buying (and offering to rent out) these holter monitors, veterinary care costs are on their way to becoming nearly as bad as human healthcare, anything we can do to help offset the cost is a bonus!
You really don't need a vet to show you how to put it on, and chances are that they don't know how anyway.
The Greater Mid Ontario club is considering the purchase of a Holter already, I think.
You also have to purchase a jacket. One of my puppy owners found someone on etsy that made mine much more reasonably than the ones available at Alba or elsewhere from what I've seen.
FWIW, you also need to purchase clippers to shave the dog, if you don't already have them. They say you can do it without shaving but I think chances are much better for it to go well when the dog is shaved.
My biggest problem has been finding a suitable tape to wrap around the electrodes, wires and dog. The one that Guelph used to send out has apparently been discontinued.
Wow that's great.... the GMDF is going to consider purchasing holter.... after all, that was only suggested three years ago and again a year ago...but hey, i'm sure by the time they dig into that savings account and buy one to rent (which would only be to their members anyway) Guelph will be back up and running, or maybe there will be a cure.... (yes, this is sarcasm!) This is exactly the #1 reason why I quit this club. I really truly hope that they decide that health is more important than a quarterly newsletter with nothing but one or two people's dogs colour photos....
OP, why don't you see if a few others want to get together and split one with you? I ended up doing just that and the cost was less than taking a couple dogs in to Guelph. And I can now test all of our dogs and puppies as they grow too....
I would be happy to show you how to put it on, it is not hard at all.
