Sasha has been with us for two wonderful months now. Further history has been slowly found out over the course of these months, and I can honestly say I am so glad I took her in, and gave her the love, affection and care she'd never had before.
This was her the day we brought her home:
This is what she looks like today, two months on:
I think she looks a lot better in the picture of her today.
It's been an adventure, one I am so glad I have undertaken. We found out that her previous owners were underfeeding her on adult food, when she should have been still on puppy food. We found out that she'd regularly been hit when she barked (even though they bought her for a guard dog). We found out that she'd never been taken for walks. Not been taken to the vet since her puppy shots. Had been kept in her crate for nearly 24 hours a day, outside in all weathers with no shelter, and no room to move. She was not allowed in the house, not allowed out of her crate or the yard, and certainly never given any affection.
Given her history, you'd expect her to have a few issues. She has none. She has never been vicious towards anyone, animal or human, even when we've been prodding her and poking her. She's not even shown teeth. She's learnt to socialise with other dogs, she's learnt that not all humans are bad. She's learnt to sit, lay down, stay, wait, get off things, travel in a car, to come back to her name. She has learnt lead manners. She hasn't chewed anything she hasn't meant to, she's not had an issue with going back into her crate, and she's felt comfortable enough to bark here.
She's won over everyone in our family, and most people who are weary of big dogs (especially dobermans) with her temperament and playfulness. She's gained some weight and has finally been to the vet, had her nails trimmed, and had lots of love and affection chucked her way.
I am so glad I got to rescue her and bring her home to us. I can't wait for more adventures with my amazing dog.
