Hello everyone!

I'm planning on bringing my pups camping this summer to the U.S. and I was just wondering if anyone knew of any cities/states in the Northeast US that had BSL for Dobermans??

Last time we went we just had the 2 min pins so we didn't need to worry but I thought I heard somewhere that some places have it for Dobermans?? (hopefully crazy talk! :D )

Anywho, I wanted to make sure we were prepared and I haven't been able to find any information on any websites.........just wanted to check with any U.S. Dob owners to confirm that its all clear??

Thanks!

That's a good website. It gives a good basis to research further to check to see if it's still good law.

Most BSL laws in the US pertain to pitts. Each state has its own municipal ordinances, such as leash laws. I would look up animal control laws where you will be at. :)

I do not believe that any state has passed any laws regarding specific breeds. This is normally handled by the individual municipalities or cities. I am not aware of any bans on Dobes in New York State. As a matter of fact I don't beleive that municipalities can ban specific breeds (by State law). Also, now insurance companies cannot refuse coverage, cancel coverage or increase rates based on dog breeds in New York State.

Don't know anything about daycare in the Washington area but I will give you a hint about the border crossing. If you are planning on crossing around Niagara Falls there is a website you can go to that will give you wait times. We travel to Canada 5-6 times each summer to go to our cabin and we have found that going to Canada Lewiston is the fastest but coming back to the states the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls is normally much faster. They have more lanes, etc. Lewiston has been known to have wait times up to 4 hours. We normally wait less than 60 minutes at Rainbow. Also, be sure and have your shot records for the dogs. We have been asked both directions on quite a few occasions.

If you are planning to camp, I've heard that a lot of campgrounds ban particular breeds. I'm not a camper, but I would definitely check that out.

Thanks yep we always have their shots and international health certificates on hand too :) The border has never asked us, but the campgrounds/parks definitely have!

Thanks for the info, I will have to make sure to check the campgrounds too, never thought of them! Damn stereotypes!!!

Dobermans are not allowed a KOA campsites. So don't plan on staying at any of those... My mom goes camping almost every weekend in the sping/summer/early fall and I've gone with her a couple times and brought Torque. Any state park where dogs are allowed, Dobes are allowed. I went to visit her one time at a KOA, in the "off season" so there was no one else even there really and had Torque (and my foster Shar Pei) with me at the time and the manager came out and told me I would have to leave because of Toruqe. I wanted to smack him, but he said he was sorry, not his idea, but company policy. Stupid insurance won't cover the "bully breeds". So do not stay at a KOA and you should be ok.

Dear OP, I live in N. Va and my dog Hera attends daycare. Just FYI most daycares in our area including Washington DC require all dogs that attend daycare to be evaluated. Some charge for the evaluation and some don't. Please make sure you have all vaccination records with you to include Bordetella in the 6 months before your trip, some require canine influenza, and that the dog have a recent fecal test, and be on a flea treatment along with all other regular vaccinations. Here are some names to check out. I hope you have a wonderful vacation her in our nation's capital.

This IS an old thread, but I just thought I’d add this in case anybody pulls the thread up--I didn’t see it mentioned above. Most national parks that I am aware of, and some state parks or even state recreation areas only allow dogs in your car, along roadsides or in parking lots, maybe in campgrounds--but NOT on the trails.

And of course they must be leashed and all that sort of stuff.

Yeah necro thread, but what the hey...

What Mel said is absolutely true. Our cabin is 10 miles from Yellowstone's west entrance. I've been in the park oh..... maybe 100 times in my life. It is no place for dogs unless you are just passing through. Some campgrounds and some lodges (i.e. Roosevelt ) allow dogs. Never on trails or backcountry or tourist attractions (like Geyser Basin, where that idiot boiled himself to death the other day. I will see people stopping at an attraction and leaving their dogs in the car on a blistering hot day in the middle of summer. It makes me want to throttle them.

There are a billion places to take our pups, Our National Parks and Monuments are not one of them.
