Smartest/Dumbest Dogs

So, CBS rated the doberman the 5th smartest dog, stating that the dobe pictured is on a rescue misson. Good for the breed, yes, but I swear that particular dog is doing a cadaver search! <chuckle> Ohhhh mainstream media, how I love/hate thee...

Only one surprise on that list for me...and that's the Golden Retriever. My neighbor has one that is dumber than a box of rocks.

Not to suck the fun out of the thread- and I know the report was done in the name of fun, or at least I hope it was!!! I hate these things though... I wish they would classify them on their ease of training maybe rather than smart v. stupid.

I agree to a point with this - but IMHO some breeds are just much smarter than others........ and some are just easier to train.

I wonder what criteria was used to determine these findings.

In my experience, you could have one of the smartest breeds and it would still be considered stupid if it was with a stupid owner and vise versa

It obviously depends on the dog. I'd test my 9 month old boy against any age border collie. He opens 3 different types of door handles at will just from watching me do it. I figure he'll be mowing the lawn by next summer.

I don't buy the Golden Retriever either but I suppose anyone could compile a list of "smartest dogs." We know and that's all that matters. It is nice to see some positive recognition for a change though.

My moms Bichon Frise is by far the dumbest dog on the planet earth. She might be the sweetest also, but she is so dumb it is almost scary.

I think those are pretty darn accurate. I've never met a basenji so i can't comment on their smarts.

Clip clop, I can only hope he starts mowing this summer!

It may be somewhat accurate but again it depends on the dog. Their are S&R dobes out their that would blow the minds of the people creating these "smartest" dogs lists.

wow, where did they come up with that? I have a hard time with a poodle smarter than a dobe, and am floored by goldens, I show for friends who breed goldens, dumb as stumps! well, not quiet but my dobes make them appear that way, even as pups, started playing the 2 I held back with the 3 they couldn't get sold, even at 4 months it was obvious who was brighter.
not surprised by the #1 dumbest, something has to go when you narrow the heads down like that. but have friends who would be horrified by the list, especially the basset breeder in my all breed club.

Dobermans are the smartest dogs with the best hair.

All the dogs that scored higher than our Dobies are a nightmare of shed fur, starting right about now.

I hate those type of lists. I own a dobe and a beagle. Beagles are wicked smart, they are just stuborn and dont really care if you are pleased at all.

Emma is trained in agility and we are going to try for nationals this summer. She knows competitive OB and also parlor tricks.

They are harder to train but they pick it up really quick. She is also trained to track cyotes (ON LEASH) and I am training her to track wounded deer and what not.

Beagles are not dumb. Stuborn Yes. Dumb No
