Sell me their doberman!??? JUST KIDDING :)

Im finding it somewhat discouraging trying to find a pup....just a question for everyone out there, how long did you have to search/wait to find your dog(s)?

Any tips to remaining patient other than chewing my nails??

By the time I get my puppy it will be about 10 months (maybe longer). Read I think I have order 4 books and a few dvds and been to a few training seminars. Also checked out a few trainers in my area. Also got a few thinks I will need once the puppy gets here some toys food bowl and crates that can change the space in side of it. Then you have to get your home ready too. Make sure he/she can't get into anything that can hurt them. So much to do before the little one gets here.

Looks like I'm in the holding pen with a good number of people. :D

It takes a looooong time to find a good fit, especially if you're more particular about certain things like I am.

Just so we have something to occupy our time, let's start chatting. :) What sorts of things are you all looking for in a new puppy? Anything on your "must have" list that is making your wait substantially longer than most?

I know it's never a guarantee on time, but I am going to stack the odds in my favor by waiting for a puppy from a BFL1 or BFL2 line. Unfortunately, it seems like I may be in for a two or three year long process, but that's what projects from Pintrest are for, lol!

I had to wait a little over four years before I was in a good place to own a Doberman. I'm currently almost two years into waiting for my next dog and probably have another 2-3 to go, depending on when I move. Since Griffin is a boy, the wait might be longer because I'll need to find a female. A good breeder will match the right dog to you, and if there's no females that fit the bill, I'll have to be patient.

It's worth the wait, trust me. And CJM's right, let's kill some time on this thread! Have you had other dogs? What are you looking for in a Dobe?

My TIPS:
- had 3 dober puppies, since 1977
- research web sites now, but never applied via. e-mail
- find a good breeder, and jump on the phone & sell yourself (like a 20 minute call)
- I get approved on the spot, never filled out a puppy questionair either
- be willing to travel (last puppy 25 hour round trip & one before 15 hours driving, over 2 days)

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly and for killing some time with me!. I think that waiting is just so much more painful when you want something sooo bad! Ive wanted a dob for about 10 years now and have been gradually putting the "bug" in my spouses ear for the last 2 years and now that Ive been able to get his committment as well,we're finally ready. We're not too picky overall, but would like a male pup from a reputable breeder. I guess that's really where the wait is going to come in.

Now here's a question...are an individuals chances of acquiring a new pup from a reputable breeder reduced if we are just looking for a companion dog?

Do you want a Canadian puppy, or a US puppy? How far are you willing to travel since most breeders don't choose to ship?

What are your goals for this puppy? Companion only - show - obedience - agility - sports?

What sort of food do you plan to feed - raw or kibble or a mixture?

Do you want/need cropped ears?

Gender or color preference?

Will you take a rescue and how old?

The breeder of my late Dober boy was no longer breeding and I had lost contact with them when they moved. It took me a year to narrow my breeder choice down to three then when we choose our breeder and we were lucky enough to be chosen by her we waited a year or so for our Soter pup. While at the time it was killing me it was well worth the wait :D

It took me nearly a year to find my pups breeder. This was after searching the length and breadth of Spain, going to shows, working dog events, and finally going through a middle man who had far more contacts than I could ever hope to meet.

Now whilst my boy came from what can only be described as a BYB in comparison to a great many guys you have over the pond His breeder did show my boys parents, (he owned both the dad and mum) however, their titles are only for Spain and whilst Toby;s parents are SKC registered they were not health tested. Which is pretty standard for over here.
Fact is, no breeders here health/temperament test. They aren't interested in helping the owners of their puppies and fact is, what you get, is what you get here, no matter how much you pay or do your research.

As and when I want another Dobe, I will have to go elsewhere for her, (I already have a male Dobe) which will mean I will have to go outside of Spain and look for her in another European country. I fully expect my search to take a couple of years at least, so I am looking, sending emails etc, etc, now.

I too am only interested in having a companion as well as I would like my girl to be a Red if at all possible.

Why?

Because.

Reds rule!

I've done the non-researched puppy from a bad breeder, and the researched pup from a good breeder. It will DEFINITELY be worth the wait!

What breeders have you contacted? Have you filled out their applications? Often breeders will know of other litters that are planned even if they don't have plans themselves. Or, you might get lucky and a breeder will have an older pup they've been holding onto to see if they can show them. That happened with my boy, and I'm truly blessed to have him.

Update: Met with a local, registered breeder and spent some time with her and her dogs...her bitch was absolutely stunning and such a sweetheart. .couldnt help but tear up when I met her. Anyways, we put a deposit down on a male from her litter, so with any luck, we should have our beautiful boy by the middle of July! So excited to take him for his training and giving him tons of snuggles.

Weve been talking about getting a doberman for a couple of years now...I think the timing was just right with finding our breeder. She gave us a call tonight to let us know that the ultrasound showed lots of pups with good healthy heartbeats! Eek, we are just so excited...now...on to figuring out how to best puppy proof the house.
