10 days ago my new rescue dobie "kilo" was neutered. he is 2.5 years old. when i picked him up after surgery he was quit swollen and bleeding some. over the next few days and after several calls to vet the swelling seemed pretty large, but he said not to worry. then on day 3 he started to drip quit a bit of very dark blood and sorta smelled. vet said probably the old blood that had filled his sac. the dripping is not severe and is more like a clear watery blood now, but is still consistant on dripping. the vet keeps reassuring me it is not uncommon for bigger older males. but i am still concerned. can any one give any suggestions or advice.

I have had countless dogs neutered and none have bled in the way you are describing.

After I had Toby neutered aged 11 months he bled a bit when we went to pick him up. It suddenly rushed out of him like someone had opened a faucet, I was in panic. Luckily we were still at the vets so he came on through, checked him over and made us sit there another hour so he could constantly monitor him. All was fine, it was just a build up in his sack area that had leaked out. However, we were under strict instructions to return to the vets if he bled again, even by just a small amount.

Your vet is both lapse in his duty of care and from what you say incompetant. He should have taken a swab of the liquid coming out of your boys operation area to see if there are any bacteria lurking there.

Please take your boy to a vet, I strongly suggest it isn't the same vet you have been dealing with these past 10 days and if there is an infection etc, I would send him the bill for your dogs treatment etc as your dogs condition sounds very avoidable to me had your vet done his job in the first place, which is attend to him the first time you expressed concern.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your boy and please do let us know what happens.

Do you know his vWD status? My male was vWD clinically affected and when he was neutered at 18 months he became very swollen, almost to the point of needing the blood aspirated. I do not remember him dripping blood but it was a long time ago. The vet had me use cold compresses to reduce swelling and it helped although it took several weeks for him to heal.
