Just wondering who has special rooms designated for their dogs and what they look like! This could be anything from a mud room with crates, storage, etc. I am looking for some pictures and ideas. Doesn't have to be fancy.
Mine is an extra bedroom on the second floor, which limits me quite a bit. I wish I had a mudroom or room with a door to the outside, but I am determined to make it half decent. Right now it is just two crates in a room with some unpacked boxes...oops.
Show me your dog rooms! Or any favorites you have come across.
our spare bedroom is dogproofed when we have a dog in there - we broke down an xpen to block off the furniture and kept a crate in there, though we failed to crate train our pup. we're getting rid of the bed in that room so there will be more room in there for a dog.
Yeah I don't have any furniture in mine, although I was thinking about putting a sofa chair by the window since my Italian Greyhound is a professional sunbather and can be trusted out of his crate.
I pretty much have a blank canvas, the room is big, 18 x 20 feet.
the reason we left the awful, uncomfortable bed in that room was for the dog...lol. it was the only plush thing in that room that he didn't try to destroy.
When I get home from work I will take a picture of our dog room. I love it. It is tiled with heated floors (perfect for the cold months), and a door to the back yard. Right now it only has the dog crates and a bowl of water and a dragon slayed comforter.
It multi functions as our training room/sun bathing room/window watching. Spoiled brats I tell ya.
my dog room is in my finished walk out basement. Probably about 12 x 12', tiled floors, with 1/2 walls and then gated off from the rest of the basement. I have french doors (with the blinds inbetween the layers of glass) out to the fenced back yard. The electrical outlets are 4' off the ground - I did design this room for dogs/puppies. There is no wood trim. The trim along the floor and around the door is all tile.
I have my crates and grooming table in there along with a couple of dog beds on the floor.
Right now, Jezebel goes into an x-pen with a dog bed in the room and Louise and Harvard remain loose with the crates open. Jezebel has not met a gate she won't jump over so that is why she goes in an xpen!
Right now we just have the crates set up in the dinnette with a piece of wood on top and the rabbit and cat food dishes on top (multifunctional )
We also have a kennel inside the garage about 6x6 with a plywood, double door dog house and that kennel space has a dog door to a 8x12 covered kennel.
I'm meh on a "dog room" besides a mud room or back room with crates and leash/collar hooks to keep all their stuff together and so they are hidden but I do want another attached indoor outdoor kennel even nicer than ours
Mine is in our walk-out basement. It is a 15X20 ft room with insulated block walls, and a concrete floor covered with thick recycled rubber stall mats. It leads out through a dog door along the wall of an unheated garage and out to a 6ft tall kennel that is about 10X20.
It comes in very handy when I am dog sitting for friends, but we are just starting to introduce Remy to it (he is too young to be left "home alone", but we want him to feel comfortable/happy in there if we need to use it at some point).
We have a sunroom in the back that we have made the dog room. We have only lived in our house for few months but when I get the money I can't wait to decorate it!

^^^^ Had dobes since 1977...their "'special room" is our entire house:
- no baby gates
- free access to the whole place
- soft mats or blankets, positioned in 2 places (at computer station & corner of kitchen)
- upstairs is a human bed comforter, folded up thick in the hallway beside the bathroom / puppy lays there, when family member is in the shower
- no dog crate or cage, in this house...not trying to make my job...quick & easy
- real dog beds, is the leather love seat or recliner or futon...or master bed
Within a few short early months, our girl was supervised and taught to respect the furniture, pillows, stuffies, etc....nothing expensive ruined.
- so I give my new pups 100% home freedoms and supervise 24/7
- quickly, what is expected sinks in and good house manners/respect of human things justbegin to happen
Because I test my young dogs from day1, and communicate the rules clear enough...I also test my pups, by leaving them alone for short periods and just go outside alone for 5 minutes to start.
- 15-30 minutes alone in entire house now (unsupervised daily)...Dad comes back inside and place is still "a-ok"...Kelly at +7 months old right now
My #1 rule, is I can't fix what i can't see...and common mistakes is a learning process, that I need to focus on resolving !!
Our dog room is where all young dogs sleep. Old Lady Eva sleeps on the couch in the family room. There are hardwood floors down with a cheap (because it can get pretty dirty!) throw rug covering it.
We have crates for everyone as we feed in crates. Ija has blankets in her crate as she will destroy a bed. Everyone else has a bed. There is a recliner in there as it is the whelping room when we have puppies. The other dogs are moved out then in to the office. The recliner is a great place to rest waiting for babies. The closet has all things dog in it. The food is in a separate container and the rest is organised in a cabinet.
We had the window in the room converted in to a sliding glass door and put in a porch to the backyard. That way, nobody has to go thundering through the house to get out in the morning and puppies have an easy access.
Wow Erynn, that is a really nice setup and very practical! I wish I had a way to make a direct path to the outside, but sadly, the only back patio door is in our living room and I can't give that up for a dog room, ha! Plus all four of our bedrooms are upstairs.
I will most definitely be looking for a better dog setup whenever we decide to move. We have at least a couple more years left in our house since we just moved in 1.5 years ago!
I would also consider a nice garage kennel type of setup, but we have three cars and a two car garage, so that will never happen. I'm sure we will eventually move to the country!
It is very nice. For the dogs. For people visitors we don't have a guest bedroom now. We throw a blow up bed in the office for now. This property has two two car garages and the hope is to some day (ah... someday...) to convert the back one in to a guest house. Until then, we don't have many people friends stay over.
I was pretty surprised with how easy and not super expensive it was to convert the window to a door. It was a large window so it worked. All they did was cut down and remove the lower part of the wall to install the door. The rest of the framing stayed intact. Then a friend who does concrete came to make the steps. That is the BEST part of the dog room. A door to outside. It. Is. AWESOME!
I really wish I could do that! The only rear facing rooms in my house are the dining room, kitchen, and living room. I can't convert those, ha! These ideas are AWESOME though and will give me something to look for in a future house! Now, onto making my boring second story carpeted room good for dogs...
My mother had them put in a bump out when the house was built, it's a 2.5 car garage with 2 cars and a bunch of stuff, but since the kennel is an addition it has plenty of space and we put a board over the joists above it so we have even more storage above the kennel.
I plan to have my future builder add on a rather fancy addition to the back of the garage with a two or three separate kennels and runs (god forbid the dogs not all get along ) and then have the indoor section heated with storage for all they're stuff.
I have a sun/mudroom that I'm in the process of making even more dog-proof. When finished, it'll have French doors, I'm thinking about customizing some with wire rather than glass to allow more airflow, and the floor will be tile that has a texture for good traction. It's not huge, but it'll give her room to exercise & play, and bark at squirrels & rabbits outside.
This was my dog room at our old place. I miss it. It was right next door to the laundry room where I would prepare their meals on the counter in there and feed them in their crates. I loved having a door to the outside as well. We've got something kind of similar now, but it's carpeted with show matting over top, it's an interior room downstairs and it's a pain.
I don't have pictures but ours comes in from the back yard into our family room that has a giant area rug in it. There's 5 or 6 crates in there and the dogs learned to run from outside straight into their crates (so they don't track mud everywhere. )
We also have a puppy room, which is supposed to be our dining room. It's tiled and there's a baby gate to keep them in. It makes it nice to just put a crate and a few blankets down then not really worry about really young puppies making a mess. We don't really use it right now because of all our dogs are pottied trained now and are allowed loose.
One of my spare bedrooms, which was originally going to be my home office. became the dog room. its right across from my bedroom so I can hear the dogs if something happens.
I've got all of their crates next to eachother complete with cushy bedding (soon to be replaced with kuranda beds) and a bin full of toys. I'm in the beginning stages of remodeling my house so everything looks like crap. they dont really do much in that room other than sleep. the living room is their domain lol
My parents made a dogroom in their basement for Mocha, who cannot be crated- I believe she may be claustrophobic, she will injure herself in a crate and will bark and drool for the duration, even if it goes on for hours. It's just concrete with carpet (she's never been interested in chewing carpet), a crate with a door removed that she'll sleep in (as long as it's not locked), two beds, and a water bowl. Plus some chews for entertainment. The door was taken off and was replaced with a wire/chainlink door which she likes better because she can see out of it.
She's allowed to free-roam in the house but that room becomes her spot when not-so-dog-savvy family comes to visit if she gets overwhelmed. Also where she goes on extended outings away from the house if they can't take her with.
Okay, I'm taking notes for when I win the lottery. I decided years ago that if I ever had the space, I'd have an "animal room" with a raised tub, grooming table, a cage bank for the cats, dog crates, a mini-kitchen for food prep, and tons of storage. Still waiting to win the lotto...
Loving the ideas! When I get to build a house it will totally have a dog room leading to outside. I currently just have a crate in our laundry, which is next to our kitchen (with no door) for Elsie, when I go out I put an Xpen across the step between the laundry & kitchen. She has access to outside through the laundry when I am home.
