Thanks for having me in the forum. Extremely useful
I have had my 6month old doberman for 3 days now and he won't eat food from the bowl. He does however drink from it and a lot. I have tried him with food from my hand and he takes it
He is attached to me like Velcro I'm amazed how quick it happened. I'm just worried about the whole eating his food from the bowl. I want to see him eat like crazy.
I wouldn't add or change anything, a puppy should learn to eat without all sorts of things to entice it. Trying all sorts of different things to get your puppy to eat will ONLY train your puppy to be picky.
Sounds like he is socially retarded and simply needs to adjust to not living in a kennel also to not having other dogs around.
Be patient and firm. Don't make the mistake of hand feeding or adding things to tempt him to eat his food. Put his food down for 15 minutes in the morning, then pick it up and do the same thing in the evening. When he gets hungry enough he will eat.
Good luck with your pup, would love to see pictures.
I think he is just being picky and a bit of a drama queen . There are lots of good topics dealing with eating issues.
I would put his food down, leave if down for no more than 20min, if he doesn't eat take it away. Wait until your next feeding time. Put the food down again. If he doesn't eat it. Take it away.
A growing puppy is going to eat it when he is starting to feel hungry. I had to do this recently with my 2 1/2 year old Dobe. They eat on my schedule. I don't cater to theirs.
Beautiful! Just love him, give him more time but DON'T cater. Could be that if he came from a kennel with many dogs, he was fed from a TROUGH. Poor baby. Keep putting food in stainless steel or ceramic...never plastic. Good luck! Penny
My boy has been on Orijen for most of his young life. He was started on a BARF diet, but I stopped that. Now, recently I realized the importance of it and went back into feeding him raw. He is doing well on it.
He is fed raw in the morning (Chicken backs, necks, turkey necks and recently chicken hearts) and Orijen Regional Red at night. As a pup he was on Orijen Large Breed Puppy, but after the switch (from Orijen to Fromm then back to Orijen) I started him on the RR with great results.
There are a lot of good foods to choose from. At his age you can feed either an "all life stages" adult food or s large breed puppy food. Really might as well go with ALS adult now...not a maintenance adult, but ALS.
Here is an excellent site to help you choose a food. I would suggest not going below a 4 or 5 star food. You will not need to feed as much per meal. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/best-dog-foods/
I prefer Natures Variety Instinct because of its high meat content. 70% meat after processing. Back to Basics and Evo Turkey and Chicken also have high meat contents.
You also want to do a slow changeover in 1/4 increments. Start with 1/4 new food with 3/4 old for three days, then 1/2 new with 1/2 old for three days, then 3/4 new with 1/4 old for three days to all new.
Watch stools and if you see loose or soft, back up a stage...assess how much your feeding and start adding a tablespoon or two of plain Greek yogurt. The probiotics will help with digestion and gas, if he has any.
Good luck...he's a pretty boy. Did I miss his name?
When we brought Lexi home she was about 4 or 5 yrs. She wouldn't drink much water, turns out she didn't like the plastic or stainless bowls I had, she eats and drinks like a champ now from ceramic. This is just my experience not a diagnosis.
