OMG! We just had the same issue. I am sooooo tired of moving a gate to going in and out of the kitchen. Even more tired of having it up when I'm in there cooking dinner. So Huck lays across the threshold and this blocks Calamity out, but it's EVERY time they have to be told multiple times. Grrrrr!

My dogs are actually really good at staying out when I'm cooking - I'm picky on that one. "Out of the kitchen" is a command that all my dogs learn. He rarely is the one who comes to check things out (*ahem Scout*) but he just couldn't resist the smells of chicken pot pie today. LOL...
I think you can tell by his posture that he knows he's not supposed to be staring at a cooking Erica.
We usually practice "stay on your mat" during cooking time. Keeps them out of the way, but then they get rewarded with whatever delicious thing I am cooking
I asked him to go lie down, he did, and then got a carrot reward.
