I was walking Hades and Snoop today and came across a neighbor of my moms with a Doberman. Hades was on leash and playing with the Doberman. Mainly play bowing, etc. We were chatting when their female GSD pup (I think she said she was just under a year) came up out of nowhere and bit Hades on his side.
It seems surface (not very deep) but I'm not a vet. I cleaned it and put neosporin on it. I'm not in FL right now so can't take him to our regular vet but should I find a clinic here to bring him to?
I don't want him to get an infection and don't know if their dog is vaccinated. Poor Hades. He didn't even want to play after that even when the other dobe was play bowing his heart out in front of hades
Poor boy! I hope he isn't took shook up I would think just making sure the wound is kept clean and monitoring it for signs of infection would be good... Don't let him lick it and such. Mila sends comfort vibes to him
Poor guy! Keep it clean by all means and I would find out if the GSD has been vaccinated. The owners of the GSD are responsible for any vet bills that their dog inflicted upon yours. If you think the bites are bad enough, by all means seek out a vet.
You could maybe ask them if they would pay for the vet bill, but if they say no, it is what it is. Technically, the probably don't HAVE to pay for your vet bill. I would have offered to do so if it were me, then again, I wouldn't have let it happen in the first place.
Poor Hades! I hope he still isn't moping and it heals up quickly! ******* said she wants the name and location of the puppy who bit him...she's not happy right now!
Dog bite laws vary from place to place Call your local Animal Control office and get the scoop! Also, were there any witnesses around? Heck in my opinion they're completely responsible for your vet bills now, but your laws may see it different
Poor Hades! Hopefully he does not have a relapse in his reactivity. I second what everyone's said about possibly seeing a vet anyway, and seeing if their dog was vaccinated. The world is just too scary out there otherwise.
I would use a betadine/water solution mixed to the color of light tea. At this point in my dog life, I'd wait. 5 years ago, I'd have gone in. I say if it helps mental sanity go ahead and go in too
Do you think the dog had something (ie rabies, parvo, etc.)? That's the only reason I'd ask about vaccines.
And yes that needs a vet, it's a shallow puncture in a popular spot for abcesses as they heal (not to panic you) but anything that large in the fights Mabels had makes me take the other dog to the vet for a safety check and possible antibiotics (Mabel always wins)
Thanks for the responses. My mom is bringing home some betadine so we will clean it more tonight. It doesn't seem to be bothering him. He doesn't lick it unless I put neosporin on it. Apparently it tastes delicious to him. So I stopped putting it on. I just clean it with peroxide.
I'm going to take him to the vet clinic my mom takes her dog to in the morning. Maybe they can give me a second opinion on his wart that's never gone away too.
I don't care about the vet bills. I can pay for it. I'll stop by tomorrow and ask if the GSD is at least vaccinated. I'm hoping, bc she's still a puppy, that they kept up with the vaccines. They also live in an expensive home so have no excuse like they can't afford it!
Even after 20 years of having dobes I still rush to the vet if only for my piece of mind, but then I'm a bit OCD when it comes to my puppers. Ok, in pretty much everything . Hope Hades is Ok, Soter and Coco send him nose pokies
Don't use peroxide. It is damaging to healthy flesh and isn't recommended anymore.
I'd personally take him in. Shanoa gashed her flank open on something last fall and it was about that size. It actually took quite long to scab over and start to heal, and she still has a little bald spot there that's slowly filling in. Looking back, I should have taken her in.
I hope he feels better That dog should not be let close to other people's babies. You know darn well a well trained animal doesnt just walk up and bite another dog.
Well that just plain sucks! Poor Hades. I agree with most everyone else. I've seen many abscess in my life from animal bites. They can get ugly. I agree also the person should pay the vet bill for this unprovoked attack. I hope they at least apologized. You shouldn't have to ask if the dog is vaccinated. They should have been up front straight away with that info.
Poor Hades, first the cat, now a GSD puppy, it's like the world is out to get him.
Any little injury shows-up so well on him too with his shiny white coat and pink skin.
For a fleshy bite puncture wound like that, usually the only you can do is just use an antiseptic astringent like Scarlet Oil/Purple Lotion. The vet can't really do anything special, it's just important to figure out how deep it is, and make sure the puncture heals from the inside out; if it closes prematurely, it can trap a pocket of bacteria (especially when it's a bite), go septic, and become infected.
ETA: Scarlet Oil doesn't seem to be marketed as such much anymore, I almost forgot from last time I mentioned it to someone. "Red Kote" is a brand name for it. It's basically a mineral oil base, with alcohols, pine oil, eucalyptus oil, biebrich scarlet, and some other active ingredients that disinfect, promote healing, dull the discomfort, and keep the wound from drying-out.
Took Hades to the vet today they cleaned his wound and put some ointment on it. Luckily it's not deep enough to need stitches or anything. They did give me a round of antibiotics to ward off infection. Now he's curled up in his bed chewing on a bully stick. I do have his coat on to prevent him from licking it. Thankfully it's cool in KY today so he's comfortable.
Thanks for all the well wishes! He's definitely feeling better today and running around like a loon.
