Well, we finally found a house we liked, put in an offer & it was accepted,
so we close in June. This is one step closer to getting our first dobe.
Now, homeowners insurance. Our agent wrote back of course stating most agencies won't cover dobes ( :( ), but suggested Hartford. I never heard of this before, but I checked out their site & saw this page. Anyone familiar with them?

I think that Farmers will take Dobermans also - but they are not everywhere. Hartford has been around for a long time. I think that Nationwide may take "blacklisted" breeds IF they have their CGC (Canine Good Citizenship). We had Nationwide for years but I switched to State Farm about 9 years ago as our dogs were just kinda ignored by our Nationwide agent, but I wanted to make a statement... so I pulled all of our insurance from them and switched to State Farm. Since then I've read that Nationwide will take them with the CGC.

Not easy finding insurance to cover our breed... depending on where you live. One thing I do have on our homeowners is extra liability. I've never had a bite in 20 years with Dobermans but you never know... so I carry the extra and hope I never need it. Of course, I am cautious with my dogs and always put them away when we have multiple people over - especially kids, my cleaning people, and workmen.

I did mention Farmers & State Farm to my agent, but she said she only has the option of Hartford.
I don't understand why they don't have other companies available, but then I am not sure how these insurance agencies work, lol!

I read that any dogs are covered if they have their CGC through Hartford, that said, my agent told me that Hartford does not
specifically list the Doberman, but lists Presa Canarios, Pit Bulls & Rottweilers, or a mix of these, or any dog with a bite history
(wow just how popular are Presas anyway?) as being on the ineligible list.

I have Am Fam, they were fine with Dobermans.

Not Rotties, though. I'd asked many years ago if they had restrictions on dogs, my agent actually suggested Dobes-- while they couldn't continue my policy if I was to get a Rottie, a Dobe would be fine, and the rest is history. Thanks Am Fam!

If anything has changed, my agent hasn't mentioned it to me.
