while most of these are simply companies that OFFER raw food (and therefore not the most reliable sources in some cases - though i DO support bravo and feed their food!), there are many other sources available. ive written a faq and ill repost it here....

Which ones have you used? I have heard that you can buy it already packaged or make it up yourself.

whiteandblue hasnt fed any of them, she just is starting to switch her puppies right now.

ive fed many diets, so ill give my input.

aunt jenis is a nice food and smells wonderful, but is only in ground and only comes in 4 flavors last time i used it (chicken, beef, lamb and rabbit). they do make cat and ferret "versions". they also have a lot of supplements, including flax seed, which can be detrimental for some. jeni b though is a REALLY awesome woman, so thats a good aspect.

halshan is only ground, and personally i dont know many people that could continually expect to pay those prices.

the same can be said for most of the other products - paying 3-4 dollars a lb for many of those things would make me broke in a month - especially for things like chicken, which can be bought for easily under 40 cents a lb in almost any place

steves is a chunked food, so some may like that. however my animals thought it sucked, and its very limited in flavors (2 of them i believe).

sojos isnt a raw food at all - they make dried mixes you add things too (meat or water, etc). so im no sure why its on the list.

bravo i have a lot of experience with because its the premade food i use almsot exclusively - i buy ground from them because its easier than me grinding my own at this point, and i do use ground for busy times in my life when i dont have time to watch the dogs eat (such as now, being on clinics 70-80 hours a week).

bravo has a WIDE variety of things - NONE of them come with supplements, and they make ground with and without organs, veggies/fruits, etc. they have RMB's as well as organs only, in ground and whole forms, as well as treats, supplements, etc.

the owners of bravo are awesome - i belong to a coop and we order approx 2 TONS of bravo every month or so, and we all adore the products . ive used almost all of their products and my puppers love them!

other places i like to order from:
www.haretoday.com - good products and some good treats too. bowie recommends rabbit ears :)
www.rodentpro.com for some feeder chicks, etc.
ive also fed wysong raw food, the BARF diet (billinghursts line), and there is natures variety (not sure if this is available nationwide yet), and omas pride (www.omaspride.com)

things to remember is that most raw foods are available LOCALLY - its usually economically prohibitive to ship food, as well as touchy with heat, etc and how long a product can stay fresh. many smaller companies only sell in their immediate area - those that ship do so with significant cost to the purchaser sometimes.

there are coops across the nation, email lists for regions and breeds, etc that can help you get good prices.

ive used bravo..and raw advantage but dont do that... go to fred myers safeway albertsons or a grocery store get your meat there... it is cheaper LOL... buy what these people sell at your local grocery store...

ive only tried them and i decided i wasnt paying that kind of money... i can get buffalo at fred myer cheaper and mackeral too.. so i use my local butcher and grocery store..

and kim dont tell people what you dont know... tonight was their first meal they eat raw bones all the time LOL... but never a full meal so when you come to my house and see what i do and have done then you can tell people what i do... until then do not assume you know because obviously hun you just dont...

whiteand blue - YOU were the one that JUST STARTED a thread and entitled it FIRST TIME EATING RAW

and your first line is "we had our first raw meal today and it was so great."

so if that isnt "our first time eating raw" then maybe you should be more careful about what you post- what else are people supposed to think? you should keep track of your own words better.

i am going off the website YOU gave us, which lists ONLY ground products, and has NO whole RMBs.

http://www.halshan.com/products.html

so again, if you know something else, dont blame the rest of us - were just reading what YOU write and the links provide.

Is this type of diet the best for a dog? When we got Max, he was on canned food as the Humane Society only feeds what is donated to them. We switched him to hard kibble Pedigree food.

Just wondering if this would be better.

When I got Hero from her breeder,Hero was on Raw, with a litlle of dry was given to her. It had hamburg, yogart, cottage cheese, egg, and some other stuff that I mixed together. But it just got to costly and I went with dry but can't find a good dry food to give her and thought maybe I could come her and get some advise. Now is there any recipes out there for raw, how much do I give (I am asuming that it depends on the weight of the dog) Am I correct or not? Thankyou for all of the advise in advance.

called me on it, youre joking right? go to that link and show me RMBs there. just show me. while they MAY have something else (i never said it was out of the realm of possibilities, they are NOT LISTED on theirp roduce list, not on the website YOU provided to US. thats all we have to go on - what YOU posted, and what YOU posted indicates that they do not provide RMB's - only ground premade mixes.

and once again - here you also said you started raw TODAY.

DOberkim posted a great thread on feeding raw HM.....there is also a link to a beginners way to understand it..... while I am by no means an expert on the raw diet, but this site was given to me when I asked about it and I found it very informative. :)

Kim is just being helpful WAB, as she knows a lot more than the most of us (me! without a doubt) about the raw diet and essential ingredients in it. She just wanted to add to the list you were great in prviding for us in the first place because of her knowledge of it.

I have a question on this.

What is the difference between buying from these companies & just going to the grocery store & buying meat for your dog?

It seems it would be the same price or even cheaper buying at the local store.
