| This may be a dumb question.... So,
I have been posting questions about the raw feeding diet the last couple of days because I just wanted to make sure that I was getting as much info as I possibly could. Wanted to make sure I was feeding correctly and the right amounts etc cause I get paranoid. Well I was talking to my friend about it last night and she was amazed that we were feeding our dogs raw now...
She made the comment "Well be careful because feeding them raw can cause tape worms!!!?? Didn't you know that?" Well, I had not really heard anything about that before... My girl has had all of her shots so shouldn't worming meds take care of that anyways? And is this even a issue that I should be worried about? I know that Doberkim and Luvbirds59 have been feeding raw for a long time. I am sure that it was just hearsay on her part but I just want to make sure. If anyone has any info on this please let me know... Thanks!!

| | Alpha | Tapeworms are caused by fleas.

| | Alpha | I personally freeze all meat before feeding just to be sure that any possible parasites will be killed, although this is mostly important with deer, boar and such "wild" meat.

| There are two types of tapeworms commonly found in the dog - Taenia spp. and Dipylidium spp. Taenia has the rabbit as its natural host, so if your dog is eating rodents, it's possible. Dipylidium has the flea as its natural host. I wouldn't expect that feeding raw could cause a Taenia problem - but I suppose it's a remote possibility if you're feeding raw, wild rabbits...

| FYI Wild bear carries Trichinosis....and you can't feed it raw...it has to be cooked, and reach a temp of 140 for about 4 minutes to kill the parasite. Bear Trichinosis can't be killed by freezing. That being said....how many of you will be feeding bear??? He he he...I got some from a friend who just couldn't bring himself to eat it....neither could I...we have lots of bears here in Warwick...I love seeing them! I gave the meat away.
Also....please B & T.....be sure you are doing research outside of DT on Raw feeding.....I am not an expert....I am only feeding Petey what I feel is best for him, and sharing my knowledge with you. You need to know what you are doing 100% on the diet. Kim being a Veterinarian has much more creditability then me, and I trust her completely.

They can all see how healthy and muscular Mr. Peter is. There was also a lot of press out there since I switched, that was pro raw, especially after the tainted dog food problems. Even my Veggie friend says although she could never feed Raw meat to her dogs, she knows that it would be the best food for them.
