| I agree - an ultrasound at 28 days is the best way to confirm pregnancy, for sure, as it is possible you could have a false pregnancy. |

Thanks. | It is usually impossible to tell if a bitch is pg, (especially if it is her first litter), as they don't even start any body changes until around the 5th or even the 6th week post breeding. Like others have said an ultrasound at around 28 to 30 days post breeding is pretty accurate at determining IF she is in whelp, but is not as accurate at counting how many. There are some (but not absolutel) secondary signs. Like she may start getting a little bit more affectionate, or wanting attention, or maybe go off her feed for a few days around the the 2nd to the 3rd week post breeding. And sometimes her vulva and area above it will stay a little bit more puffy looking after the first month compared to a bitch not bred or pg in which the vulva will start going back to original size. Then later on her nipples will start to get pink and larger looking. These are not always accurate signs, but sometimes, they can be text book. How old is your bitc? Hopefully she is not under two yrs of age. If you are new at this, please read alot and ask alot of questions, for her sake and the pups sake. Be prepared for at least 6-to 10 pups. And a litter of Dobe pups can get pretty demanding so hopefully you have a large area for them to grow and have fun in. Do you have someone to help you when/if she whelps in the middle of the night, and has a problem? Keep a constant contact with your vet. They are your best safety net!! good luck and keep the forum updated. |

A Doberman is not fully mature physically or psychologically at one year of age. Does she already have any show or work titles to her credit? |

| Just a heads up, folks are going to be upset that you bred a bitch so young, but hopefully that won't run you off. There are a tremendous number of very knowledgeable and helpful folks on this board. Keep an open mind, ask questions, live and learn! If you don't belong to a local kennel club, please consider joining one.
I think you will find the following timeline helpful: Pregnancy Timeline - DPCA Breeders Education
There are many more useful articles on the DPCA website here.
Good luck!

| You may want to get her to the vet and have her checked out, if only to get her the proper prenatal care so that you don't lose her or the pups. |

| Yes, your bitch is waaaay to young. She needs to grow up mentally and physically before tackling a litter of pups herself. It is like a 12-13 yr old girl (human) having a baby. Not good!! But what is done is done and if she is pg, Please, please do right by her and the pups, everything you can possibly do to make it easier for her. Nobody is condemming you, but hopefully you will listen to others, that have experience, cause whelping and caring for a litter of Dobe pups, is not a piece of cake, and will require alot of work and diligence on your part to make sure they all make it (and that the mother especially isn't stressed more than necessary) and are healthy and happy, well adjusted, well cared for babies. |

Also, you will get better responses if you start a new thread rather than reviving a very old thread on a totally different topic.

However, if you want protection for your farm, isn't that what the Boerboel were developed for? Totally different styles of dog, I understand, but Dobermans are not property guarding dogs; they are personal. |

There is a breed that originated in northern Africa, the Azawakh, that was developed as a guard dog. It is a very aloof animal that I feel confident would be formidable doing its natural job, and is structurally perfect for the tough terrain. They are a relatively smaller breed so they wouldn't be much of a visual deterrent, but they or the Boerboel would be your best bet if you can find someone who keeps them in your area. |
