New puppy, few questions

Hi everyone, first post here. I got Kaya about 2.5 weeks ago, she's been great so far. I have a few questions I'm not sure about. I've had dogs before, just not mine personally, and never had a puppy.

She has a little scar on the top of her head, the breeder said it was from playing with her brothers and sisters and got cut. Its white and about the size of a large grain of rice, will this go away?

She seems to have very little dandruff sometimes, I bought shampoo for dark haired dogs, is that good enough? Or will brushing her help?

She gets a bit of eye goop, I heard they shouldn't have any, what could cause this?

What age should she be spayed?

Thanks everyone for the newbie questions.

Carl

Hi,

Welcome to the DT from Kansas City.

How old is your puppy?

I think brushing will loosen and help remove the deadskin. I have my boys on fish oil, flax oil, and borage oil. That combined with a good diet and brushing seems to eliminate dry skin.

Does Kaya get goey stuff in her eyes all the time or is it just an occasional sleepy?

Congratulations on your new puppy. Where are those pictures???

Hi cjarrett, I would think the scar would go away in time. As far as dandruff, fish oil and a good dog food will help there. Spaying is something that can be done I think starting about 4 months of age. Eye goop is nothing to be really worried about unless its a greenish color and she seems to be getting it a lot. Hope that helped

Welcome to DT and Congrats on the new puppy!

This is a very good thread to educate yourself as to when to spay your girl.

First, welcome to DT!

In response to the scar question, have your vet take a look at it when you go in for your next appt. to make sure it's okay. The scar should disappear.

For dandruff, feeding a high quality food should quell most of it, Canidae helped my red boy with his flakes. If she continues to have dandruff after a food switch, using an oatmeal/aloe shampoo will help calm and moisturize her skin. Vets usually stock this type of shampoo. Also, flakes may also be a sign of stress (i.e. new situation, family, training).

Eye goop is fine as long as it isn't excessive, green, yellow, doesn't have blood in it, or accompanied by any other symptoms such as sneezing, redness, or swelling.

As far as spaying her,do a search on DT, it has been discussed it in several threads. There are a couple of options.

Anyways, congrats on your new addition and let's see some pictures!

Welcome to the forum! You came to the right place - everyone here is so helpful and knowledgeable. I have a 6 month old puppy and she has eye gook every day. It is always kind of clear to white. I don't try to wipe it out but do wipe it off if it is hanging out onto her fur. Sorry, kinda gross, but the point is NOT to wipe the eyeball or the mucous membranes around the eye. Also, my puppy had a puppy bite wound on her cheek when she came home with me at 8 weeks of age. It did resolve on it's own but it took almost 8 weeks until it was completely healed (it was a raised area of sealed off inflammation that never ruptured to the outside). As someone said, ask your vet about your puppy's wound. Good luck and please post some photos of your pup!

Thanks everyone for the great info.

Her eye goop is daily, but it wipes away easily, and is usually clear/white maybe a tinge of yellow. Her eyes are always clear though.

I think the scar will probably go away, it looks a bit better now.

Thanks for the articles on spaying, I will do that when she is ready. She's such a well behaved puppy already, except for peeing and pooing on my bed once, but what can you do.

I have pictures uploaded in my profile, how do I display them here?
