| Deworming question Hi everyone. I was wondering what type of dewormers you use. Any tips you might have, brands you use and how often you use them are all appreciated.
Thanks so much!

| I use Advantage Multi every month - it's a heartworm preventative, flea treatment/preventative, and treats/prevents roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. |

| Gunner is on Drontal Plus right now b/c the training place we go to have mini horses and he, for some reason, LOVES to eat what he finds. Also b/c he'll eat kitty crunchies that he finds in the yard. UGH!
The dosage is two step - second dose given 14 days after the first. If you suspect that worms are present you could always take a sample to your vet to check and then go from there. I know too that Revolution does prevent some types of worms so you could also look into that.

| | Big Dog | Best thing is to see a vet and get a poop sample to see what type of worm/worms the dogs has. Last time one of my dogs got tapeworms my vet gave me Virbantel (Drontal). Two tablets and that was that |

| My pup will be on Sentinel (milbemycin plus lufenuron). It's a monthly chewable that protects against roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and heartworm. It also contains a flea growth regulator (flea birth control; the lufenuron) which means that if Tucker picks up a flea or two, it won't be able to reproduce and infest the house. We're in a low-flea area, so I won't worry about a topical flea med just yet.
I know a lot of places are using monthly Interceptor, which is just the milbemycin. It's used as a monthly dewormer.

| I use front line and heartguard on my furbabies. I used to used interceptor but one dog had a reaction and had to go to the emergency clinic so now it is heart guard. I use monthly. |

| You should have a fecal checked every 6 months or so because sometimes they can pick stuff up that isn't covered by a general dewormer. In which case, a specific dewormer/antiprotozoal would need to be used. |

The horses are on a daily dewormer so I'm not too worried about the horse poop she eats but the cats eat all sorts of rodents and who knows what else. I'm worried about her picking up something from them.
Thank you everyone for your advice! I really appreciate it. I'm going to talk to my vet next week. See if she can go ahead and do a fecal on both dogs (eventhough Zipper isn't such a poop eating fanatic). He just had his yearly checkup last week too but I didn't even think of having his poop checked. :-/
Thanks again everyone! |
