| Kim,
Ok I am really curious if I am feeding my guys enough food now, I feed both of them roughly 4 to 5 cups a day of Canidae, but I read you were feeding 6 to 8 cups for your kids. Am I feeding enough considering my guys are pretty active we have a huge backyard and they do alot of unning and playing. maybe you could write a few pages on feeding RAW for the begginer, you know where to find the food , where to get good deals, how much to feed, bones or no bones. I have though of going raw i am just afraid my guys will choke on the bones or something else like the grissle in gizzards. Thanks for the post and help

| | Alpha | I think you missed where Kim stated that Rah has hollow legs, and that's were he puts all this food.... If your dogs look great you're feeding enough.

| Wow, they sure eat better than the whole population of 2nd and 3rd world countries!!! Maybe better than some in our own country. They are certainly healthy looking!

Secondly, there are differences between the length of our digestive tract (8-9m) and that of a dog’s digestive tract (3-4m). This indicates a shorter transient time between intake and excretion and decreases the time that the bacteria have contact with the digestive system. The shorter the transient time the less likely it is that Salmonella and other bacteria can break through the gastrointestinal barrier and enter the system.
Also important to note is the differences in the digestion of carbohydrates (significant because of the grain content in most dry dog food). Humans have a-amylase, an enzyme dogs lack, in their saliva that starts digesting carbohydrates as soon as they enter the system. Dogs do not start to digest any carbohydrates they eat until it reaches their stomach with the majority of digestion taking place in their small intestine. The high percentage of carbohydrate in most dry dog food leads to situations where the food stays in the system longer (8-12 hours). However because a raw diet is meat based takes about half the time to digest (4-6 hours), thereby limiting the time that any possible bacteria may exposed to their system.
Hope this makes sense... | Hmm, I'm going to show my ignorance about feeding raw with this question...because the raw food goes through the system so much faster, does this mean I'd need to adjust my boy's "potty" schedule to accommodate this? |

| When lexx was on raw he normally only pottied once a day, in the morning. While raw is processed by the body faster, because in theory more of it is used up, there is actually less pottying going on.
hope that helps!

| | Alpha | normally dogs eat between 2-3% of their body weight and also depends on activity.my slug who is 60 lbs eats a little more then a pound a day. my gsd who is 90 lbs eats 2 lbs a day, and my 8 month old terror eats 3-5 lbs a day as she is a demon ... you basically start with say 2 lbs,and go from there, dog loses weight, add more raw. dog gains too much, cut back a little..
mine poop maybe twice a day, nice little milk dud size poops, maybe 3 or 4 of them. on kibble they pooped 4 times a day large loads and it stunk.
