| Pig ears/pork chews I am looking for something new to give the dogs to chew. They love bully sticks, but I would like to give them variety, so I was wondering if anyone gives pork chews or ears, etc. The bully sticks are so expensive and stinky. I've heard that pork chews and ears are digestible. Is that true? I occassionally give pressed raw hides, but am scared to do that to much because of them not being digestible. They really don't care for marrow bones to much, so do you think pork chews are safe? |

| My guy get's really disgusting gas if I give him any rawhide or pig ears. But it sure does keep him entertained for a while. I think pig ears are probably more digestible than rawhides, but both make a huge mess. maybe you could try making your own dehydrated deer or beef chews |

| My boys love hooves! They smell bad, but they last long and make them happy!

| I have found good prices on Red Barn bully sticks from petfooddirect.com. These really do not smell to much. We buy them by the case and the site sends out additional discount codes throughout the month any where from 13% off up to 22%. We get the 12 inch bully sticks which usually costs us a little more than 3 dollars a piece.
We also like to get the Red Barn pigs ears, but they don't last very long.

| | Alpha | Pig ears can cause pancreatitis in some dogs. I hand them out maybe once in a blue moon.
Cow hooves can splinter, I don't think they're very safe.
The standard around here for chews are raw marrow bones and knucklebones.

| | Alpha | You can try the old "stuffed and frozen kong toy." I ususally use a mash made from Bane's dog food (watered down) along with apple, carrots, broken down hard biscuits, and bits of roll dog food. I make 5 at a time and freeze them in heavy duty zip-lock freezer bags. He gets 1 a day. Other times I use an interactive rubber ball... Everlasting Fun Ball, Everlasting Fun Ball
I fill it up with Old Mother Hubbard Meaties Treats (usually liver) and let him have at it, lol.
I also give him moozles, Merrick Pet Foods - Dog Treats
or Bully sticks.
Hope this helps, lol.

| I personally know two dobermans who died from eating hooves. The splintered and sliced up the intestine. One was one of Alisa Brotherhoods (Touchstone). |

| Thanks for the replies. I found some pig ears made in the U.S. where I buy groceries. I got a package that had two in them, so I am at least going to try them to see if they like them. I will stay away from the hooves. I don't give any kind of chew very often, maybe once a week. I do think that any kind of chew poses some risk, which is why I NEVER give them to my dog's unsupervised. They don't like nylabones much or marrow bones. I will also still give bully sticks, because they do love them. I will give the Red Barn kind a try. Thanks Kratty! |
