| | Big Pup | ear cropping based on weight or age? hey guys, i had a little concern when i took my pup to the Vet today, maybe some of you guys can shed some light. i took my puppy to the vet today to have him consulted about getting his ears cropped, he is 11 weeks old but weighs 16 pounds (breeder might have lied about age, but that's a thread i already made). vet took a look at him and said "his age seems accurate from what i can tell, i can set up an appointment for two Weeks from now" i asked " don't dobermans have to be between the age of 8 weeks to 12 weeks to have their ears cropped?" and he replied witI've heardh " I base the ear croppings on their weight I will only crop the ears if they are between 20 - 25 pounds. sometimes the ears stay standing sometimes they don't it just depends on genetics". does this sound right? first time i've heard someone base ear croppings off weight and not age, what do you guys think? should i just go to another vet? all help is appreciated oh and by the way sorry for all the bad grammar and misspelled words, I am on my phone and using the touch screen is very hard :/ |

| That screams "find another vet" to me. Where do you live? I'm sure many fellow DT members can recommend a good ear cropper based on where you live.Good luck to you. |

| I'd go with a different vet. Where are you located? I can't remember, off hand.

| It's very important to go to a vet who specializes in doberman ear crops! It's not something most vets can do well at all. The last thing you want is for your puppy to have an awful crop that you have to live with for the rest of your pet's life. Perhaps if you post your location folks here can recommend a different cropping vet? And you're right, it needs to be done 8-12 weeks, so ASAP! |

| The two vets recommended for cropping are in Katy and also in Frisco. I'll try to get their info for you. I, personally, would not consider any other cropping vets in the state. The reason for this is because if I'm going to put money down than I'm going to give the money to the most experienced and well respected vets available. Cropping is an art and a skill that many vets lack and your dog's ears are something you'll have to see for the life of your dog.
Edit: Quote:
From what I've seen, and heard, the reputable breeders in TX use either...
Dr.Crouch at Grand Park Animal Clinic in Katy, TX
Dr. Debbie Schaffer at Animal Hospital of Frisco
or they fly somebody in from out of state.
