| Ivan Broke a Toe It was confirmed at the vet today Ivan broke a toe on his right front paw. We were supposed to start a beginner novice OB class tomorrow night. I'm so bummed. Now it's splint changes and restricted activity. |

| Bummer! I know the disappointment, Brandy was supposed to start her nosework classes on Saturday. Hope Ivan heals fast!

| He's e-collared and sitting in an x-pen while I'm at work. Poor puppers!
This is going to be a long 6 to 8 weeks. It'd be so much nicer if I could just stay home with him. He wouldn't need the e-collar then.
I don't even know how to keep him entertained when I'm gone. With the e-collar on he can't really chew anything as he can't utilize his paws.
Anyone have any suggestions for keeping him entertained when I am home? Bones will only get us so far.
I haven't gotten to it yet in the CU Book, but would the "relaxation protocol," I think it is, be something we could practice?
I did find out they should be having another round of the Beginner Novice OB classes in March, so I'm happy about that. |

| I got home yesterday and he had slid the entire x-pen three feet across the kitchen floor. I'm glad I bought a "top" for it so it maintained a square shape instead of potentially collapsing in around him.
I have to say I like his second splint better. The first one was up to his elbow. This new one only goes up to his ankle.
I also brought out his raised feeder again. I figured it would be easier for him to eat from. |

I didn't think Rimadyl was supposed to make them sleepy, but Ivan was definitely doped up.

| I was hiding Ivan's food trying to keep him entertained while he heals and unfortuantely his foot slipped through a hole in the cat tree and he got his splint caught. Pulling his foot out the splint slid down an inch or so.
My vet said to pay attention if it slides down because it could then be too tight on his foot. Worried about that I took the splint the rest of the way off.
Of course this all happens right after my vet has closed for the day.
I have a vet appt. Monday evening that was originally for him and my cat Fuzzy, but after the toe incident he got the vaccines he was missing and I took him off the appt. Now I'll be adding him back in.
I hope this doesn't set us back. |

| I have had Dobes break toes before. One did it jumping off the bed. My vet never splinted? Sweep tore a toe tendon on her right rear foot. It looked horrible because the toe splayed straight out flat. The ortho doctor had me rest her and do only leash walks for 2 months and it healed and went back to normal position. I was so surprised! I have photos of it and will try to post.

I hope this doesn't set us back. | Glad you took the splint off once it slipped. There can be real problems if it slips but is still on.

| I managed to keep Ivan's last re-splint on for two weeks. I wish I wouldn't have succeeded. He has a raw spot on his foot now - about the size of a pencil eraser.
Anyhow, tonight we go in to have it re-x-rayed. It's been 5.5 weeks. I hope it's healed so we can get back to fun and training. |

| Ivan's toe checked out okay.
Our first day back at SAR training wasn't so hot though. Hopefully he'll rebound quickly.
Looks like the next round of Beginner Novice OB doesn't start until the end of March. |
