Puppy Vaginitis 6 week old (long)

We bought a Dobergirl last week. She just turned 6 weeks Thursday. If you recall, we lost our 10 1/2 year dobe in September from bone cancer. We still have our 7 yr fawn female.

She was fine for the first few days we brought her home. Then she began to constantly try to pee all over. Only a few drops, she would walk around. She would squat again and sometimes nothing would come out.

We took her to the vet, brought in some poop and urine (that was a riot getting it). Both came back negative for bacteria. She has lots of white cells though. I put her on the ground to show him what she does (constant squats). Weighed in at 8.2 lbs.

She's fed Earthborn puppy with water in it, in elevated bowls. She eats real good and drinks. Sleeps for two hours, plays hard for an hour or so.

He wants us to watch for discharge. Wash her who who with bacterial hand soap once a day. On amoxicillin drops every 12 hours, and retest in 15 days. She hasn't been dewormed or any shots yet. I honestly don't want her immune system compromised until we figure out what's going on. I use baby wipes to clean her who who, and trimmed the excess hai off her vulva, in case the wet sensation makes her think she needs to potty.

He thinks it is juvenile vaginosis, before now. I worried it might be that euro (can't remember the name). He did mention that and stones before the culture came back. I also asked if maybe apple cider vinegar or cranberry might help, or diet change, which he said not right now. She had a constipation issue one night, and I have her 1tsp pumpkin. Her reply? CANDY (in a little girls voice). Did the trick!

Breeder and i are in constant contact. Hes reibising my vet bill. I'm frustrated, and scared. After losing our older girl so recent, my emotions are on edge again.

On the other side, we bought a playpen for babies. She slept in their great until the fourth day. She climbed out of it, scared the crap out of us! So now she's got the whole living room, and no playpen. She uses peepads to poop. She also can climb on the couch (we put pillows and blankets on the ground to make it more safe for her. She is quite the boogar!

This is My 3rd dobie and my husbands 7th or so, lol. Anybody have any advice? Forgot to mention, she had a nose drip at the vet office. Thats also what the antibiotic drips were for. Our puppy's father has a known wheat allergy. She's been scratching at her ears lately. Not trying to be paranoid, but want other dobe owners experiences ad input. Thanks in advance!

The first problem is that she was removed from her Mother and Littermates prior to 8 weeks of age. Puppies should absolutely stay with their Mom/Littermates until at least 8 weeks. In many states it is against the law to place a puppy prior to 8 weeks.

Vaginitis and UTI's are very common in female puppies. Vaginitis usually does not need treatment, and frequent squatting as you described is not a symptom of vaginitis, but *is* a symptom of UTI.

I have generally put all of my female puppies on cranberry right from the start and have had little problem with either.

You brought her home several weeks too early - the breeder should still be dealing with these issues. I prefer 9wks at the earliest to bring a puppy home and older is better yet (unless the breeder sucks).

I had a bitch with puppy vaginitis which remained in spite of all sorts of treatment until her 1st heat. It just got less and less as she got older until it eventually disappeared. It never had any impact on her ability to hold her pee or poop.

I don't agree with teaching a dog to poop on paper in the house or puppy pads. You then have to transfer this habit to outside and by then the pup knows they can eliminate in the house.

I have no idea what Earthborn Puppy food is but it doesn't sound like either an All Life Stages (ALS) food or a Large Breed Puppy food. It may have too much protein or calcium for controlled growth for a dobe puppy.

You should be using a grain free food especially free of wheat if her sire has that issue. ETA: Your food gets a rating of 3 stars out of 6 - not great. This comes from http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...cat/all/page/1

I won't comment on what the Vet has prescribed because, unless you distrust this Vet for good reason, then he is doing what he considers the right thing in this case and has way more experience than me in dealing with puppies with health issues. (The immune system takes a long time to mature and so does the digestion.)

Did you mean UTI - urinary tract infection? At 6-7 wks old, this puppy has to pee every hour approximately.

Brinks had recurrent UTIs and we started to wipe her with hypoallergenic baby wipes after every single time she peed. She also went on an antibiotic but we wiped her every time while she was on the antibiotic and then for about a month after she was done. We also put her on cranberry pills from the vet, and we plan to keep her on them. Between the above and some food changes, which may or may not have anything to do with the UTI issues, we have not had a UTI in the last 3-4 months.

My parents husky had vaginitis as a puppy and her only symptom was a pus-like discharge. She never had the squatting symptoms. I agree with others that the constant squatting sounds more like a UTI.

I agree with all of you. There is no sign of blood as of yet. Maybe we caught it early.

As for the young pup, I agree also there. I don't like taking pups that early. I know they should have stayed longer, to learn basics from the mom and siblings, etc. I'll tell you the story (lots of coincidences and signs for our Angel).

I bought a small bag of earth born pup because that's what they fed. The vet suggested Iams. I subscribe to whole dog journal, and know all about dog food analysis. I also watch seminars of Dr Andrew jones (online vet). I have heard about too much protein can cause issues, and hears the opposite. I want the right food for her. My bone cancer dog was on Evo. I do whatever it takes to help our dogs. I have never had a dog with this problem before. I read GreatDane Lady's notes too on it.

Where should I get the cranberry? And how much to give her, and how. I appreciate everyone's advice here. With her being young, I don't want to hurt her health. She's on antibiotics for 15 days, she's on day 3.

Your "Breeder"? should have NEVER let that pup leave so young......... Puppy vaginitis is seen a lot ... No Need to treat it as they will out grow it ... putting them on antibiotics at this age for something so minor is something i wouldnt do, But hey thats just me and MHO.

You can get the cranberry at Wal-Mart, Walgreens..... even most grocery stores with a pharmacy. I get the softgels and my dogs think they are treats.

I know when I had a Uti, I peed every 15 minutes. I bought a bottle of cranberry juice, no sugars, etc (1/2 gallon). Within 2 hours the frequent urge settled way down.

I figured since she's on antibiotics, the cranberry would be a little support. Still no sign of discharge or blood that we see. I know it can be microscopic.

I'll go to the store and pick some cranberry goods.

Not sure if this was mentioned but I absolutely disagree with giving a 6wk old pup free run of the house. Too easy to eat things not suppose to. (Electric cords, and well anything really)
Take the playpen back and get a large dog kennel.

Just give her one a day for now. See if she will just take it whole. Mind do, they love it.

Ok, will do. I trying it in a few minutes. Thank you so much for your input.

I have a crate, not big enough to sleep and pee in. I need a larger one, I agree. But until i get her urinating issue resolved, shes in the living room with me. We have it bordered off, no cords, etc. pillows and blankets around cracks. Shes real good, sleeps, does her business on the floor, then climbs back on the couch to sleep with me. I wake up everytime she gets up. Play with her until she gets tired. If anything, ive had bad sleep, lol. But shes worth it! Will get one this week.

Cranberry keeps the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall easier to get rid of a UTI, this is for people too.
There is a story of a dog that had a UTI for a year the people kept trying different antibiotics until they found what worked. Story is on Petoftheday.com 01/06/2013.

Jaffa is on a distinguished road
Get another opinion, did you say she is squatting and trying to pee but can't? My pup had the puppy vaginitis and grew out of it, I also called the vet when I saw her anal glands were excreting juice before she pooped, and I never remembered that with my other pup. But the vet said it was normal and she did grow out of that. The constant squatting with no sign of issues after vet testing would make me want to take her somewhere else. Not because of this issue but check out Nzymes.com, it is a great company and I have been using their nzyme graduals for maintenance for almost twenty years on all of my dogs. I know it keeps the immune system humming and there is other benefits for my animals in using it too. The sight has a lot of information about a lot of things and they will talk to you one on one if you have any questions. Jaffa

I bought a small bag of Taste of the Wild- high Prairie Puppy. Ill slowly transition her to it. I mix her cranberry pill with her food.

I'm crossing my fingers and toes that this is the right combo. She gained 2 1/2 lbs this week.

I bought a bottle of hypoallergenic shampoo. She hasn't been bathed since we got her. She's been itchy lately.

I agree. Cranberry won't generally cure a UTI, but does help prevent them.

The whole point of a crate is to be too small to pee in... the crate needs to be The Sacred, Holy Place Where Puppies NEVER Pee! Puppies need to be confined only when they are empty (have already peed and pooped, have not just eaten or drunk), and only left confined for a period of time that allows them to successfully wait to be taken from the crate and OUTDOORS to eliminate.

If you are waking up every time she gets up, why in the world are you not taking her OUTSIDE???

I won't take her out in the middle of the night due to coyotes. They have been known to hang out behind my house and can jump my 6' brick fence. She does go out with us during the day with
Our older dobie. She asks to go out and poop, and we praise her.

Do you think crating her at night will worsen her urine issue? I'm so frustrated. She slept midnight till 3, then slept till 6am. Didn't poop since midnight. I want to introduce her to the new food, but don't want to upset her tummy to add to the urine issue. Grr, wish I could snap my fingers and cure her.

She's also turned into a dobergator, which were working on. We ignore her when she bites hard, and plays too rough. We also are working with our older dobie to accept her. She's put the little one in her place 2 times (while we're there). Puppy got in her face while she was lying down and was too hyper. No bites, just showed her teeth and snapped at her. Puppy ran off, and left her alone.
