They haven't suggested anything yet. We did buy a big bottle of Dasequin for her to start and my father in law said we should ask about valerian root for when she starts to feel much better (to help keep her calm). Nothing different with her diet yet either. We did let them know that she eats Blue Buffalo and someone on the ortho dogs yahoo group said to pick up some plan pumpkin to help her poo.

Fish oil is good for the lubrication for joints, tendons- everything, really.

(Just curious, which formula of Blue Buffalo do you feed?
We have that in common, too!).

I don't know about the pumpkin but I always have a small bag and a few cans of I/D food at home just in case. Thor is a little ah "delicate" at times.

We do, too!

Once in awhile, just like all of us, or a child, the intestines just get a little bug.

Another suggestion, is a dollop of yogurt, atleast once a day.

With the surgery, pain meds, stress, injury, the healthy bacteria in the intestines is destroyed. What happens then is that the bad bacteria have an opportunistic advantage.

C dif can result, a compromised immune system, constipation, toxins are not expelled, UTI can present ...

If yogurt is not an option, you can go to Whole Foods and/or any other Natural Supplement store and purchase refrigerated acidophilous. This is in a liquid form and it is the live healthy bacteria in mammals' intestines.

Start with a 1/2 teaspoon once a day. PM with any questions. There is so much more available.

I've thought about some puzzles, but a lot of them seem to be pricey. Maybe I can make something, I'll have to see what I can find.

Coming from a vet clinic that sees the horrors of clients not listening to after surgery protocol, please keep limited activity to limited activity. Everyday you do things right is one day closer to your baby getting better. Don't be one of the patients that feels sorry that the dog is crated or under leash walk only and turn your dog loose. You can undo what your vet worked really hard to fix. And then you get to start all over. So glad the surgery went well and things are good.

I bought some puzzle toys but I found he just got up more in trying to solve them. Bones were best.

Brandy did well last night and the doctor said she's ready to come home. We are picking her up a little later this afternoon. She's got a little swelling in her hock, but he said that's to be expected and she's not using that leg much yet. We'll see how she's doing on day 3-5 with that, we may have to try an anti-inflammatory. Hopefully she won't and it will not be an issue.

- just a thought, would a trampoline bed help ??

When Amy came out of her last surgury, all doped up the back legs still not working when we brought her home / either that or leaving her overnight, in a cage, Vet said "take her home"...lol...she is in good hands.
- we helped her walk and into the Volvo wagon back seat, with a bath towel under her belly and lifting up on each end, helping old girl walk to the car...and we used the towel to get Amy up the front steps and into the house...and up on the couch to finally rest

Probably best if either mom or dad sits with Brandy in the back seat of the CRV, driving home....now the pampering/spoil time, for Brandy >+>...he-he.

NO. This is a bone that has been cut and repositioned. You want the dog to be on a flat stable surface.

Brandy is home!!!!! She was really restless at first, but is now all cuddled up with my husband. I can tell we're going to have quite a road ahead of us. I already had to give her a bully stick to get her to lay down!

My husband worked on massaging the swelling in her hock and it already looks better. We will continue to do that and hopefully keep it in check.

They did put her on an anti-inflammatory so I'll be watching that like a hawk. She hasn't pooped yet, but it's gotta be coming soon!

I'll try to get pictures up tomorrow. It honestly doesn't look that bad, I was prepared for much worse.

So glad to have her home!

That is great news. I do remember shoveling a path to Cleo's favorite poop spot after one of her ACL surgeries. We had a ton of snow then. Of course Cleo was actually more stable on her three legs than I was on mine (well 2 legs and a cane kind of equals 3 legs

)

Long night. She kept telling us that she had to go potty so we'd bundle all up and take her out, but then she wouldn't do anything just want to sniff around (she would pee on most of the trips, but it was an afterthought). I thought she may have to poop, so we did it a few times but there was nothing. About 3:00am we decided to just try to get her to lay down and relax, but then she wet the bed. I'm thinking no more water in the middle of the night although she will need it for pooping so I'm torn on that. About 7:00am she finally quieted down and slept. Hopefully as she heals this will calm down a little!

I'm so glad she's home with you! Was she on IV fluids the whole time she was in the hospital? If so, that could be why she wet her bed. When we have animals on fluids during and after surgeries, we have to be sure to walk them a lot more because they are so well hydrated. It takes a day or so for the urine output to get back to normal. I'm sure she will settle in and figure everything out. Just glad she is well and is back home with you.

Anyone have advice on how to get the Fentanyl patch off? They said to take it off this morning, but it's stuck like glue. They gave us a little adhesive remover wipe, but it's so small it's pretty useless. I was going to try to just rip it off fast like a band aid, but that bugger is not moving.

I would try some mineral oil/babyoil on a q-tip, but just be careful you only touch the edges, so you don't get the fentanyl on you. The adhesive is only around the perimeter, but sometimes surgical glue is added to the edges if it is not sticking very well on it's own. Good luck!

Well it's off, because my idiot husband ripped it off. I told him I was having a hard time and we'd need to run and grab some baby oil. He wanted to "take a look at it" (I should have known better) and just grabbed it and ripped it. Poor girl let out a big yelp and sat down, looks like she's got some road rash. Grrr....men!

Ouch! Poor Brandy! Well, I'm glad it's off, but I bet your vet did reinforce the adhesive with Surgical glue, which is like super glue. Ouchy! Bad, bad, husband!

How was her night last night? Hopefully she's settling in OK.

She was much calmer last night, only had to go out a couple of times. She's not toe touching much yet, but they said that could take up to two weeks. Right now, her and I are snuggled up on the floor.
