Stomach woes

More a vent than anything else, but Griffin did it again. Naturally, on a major holiday when the vet's closed. We went on a hike, he ate something, and now he's erupting like Old Faithful. I am counting hours until the vet opens tomorrow morning.

Thankfully, I scored some chicken, rice, and sweet potatoes at the market (market was out of pumpkin and so are we at the house). Roasted the potatoes in the oven, and he's getting a mix of that with chicken and rice. I'm mixing water in it to make sure he stays hydrated. He's drinking, he wants to eat, and his gums are okay.

Still, I know how this is going to go. He'll start getting mucus in his poop and it won't quit till we get to the vet and get the meds. I forget what they put him on the last time. He really does have a solid "leave it", but he's a sneaky little devil and will snarf something up when my back's turned. I love my Doberman, but dear Griffin, your timing sucks, amigo.

Thanks, me too. I hate it when he's sick. He spent most of the evening curled up under his fleece, sleeping, in between trips to the backyard. Poor guy!

Hmmm my Griffin did the same...been pooping since yesterday lunch time. I pressure cooked and blended brown rice, water and chicken breast and added it to his kibble as gravy and he wolfed it (he declined dinner and was fussy with breakfast). Last poop was semi-upstanding. Nothing like lots of puppy pooh for christmas!
Good luck, hope Griff comes right soon.

So my last post was a bit optimistic - as I sat down with a glass of wine hubby sent me to investigate the pitter patter of oversize feet and my Griffin was starting a squat in the passage. I picked him up holding him upside down-ish but we left a trail of liquid poop all the way to the back door. Then when I was elbow-deep in cleaning materials crawling about the floor he stole the cleaning rag from the cleaning water and skipped triumphantly into the lounge with it. Once I retrieved that he set upon his squeaky ostrich toy and squeaked it like a maniac until I was done.

Hope your Griffin is doing better. And has manners.

Haha, Griffin does have manners, which is good because at 80 pounds I am not picking him up to carry him to the back door. He mostly lets me know when he's going to explode, and if he can't make it, he tries for the hardwood. I still need a new area rug for my office. It's a good thing Target sells them cheap, right?

SamK, is your Griffin a red boy too? I'm picturing him skipping down the hall with a poopy wet rag, grinning like a maniac. Just like the expression on my Griffin's face when he scarfed the goose poop and other unnamed substances at the park the other day. "Hey just you wait and see what I've got for your holiday gift. It's cooking right now!"

Merry Yarkmas, Happy Hanupoop, and Happy New Antibiotics to everyone.

I thought it was, he had a more normal-ish poop this morning. And then I went out. Came home. At least he'd been polite enough to walk into the kitchen before he let 'er rip.

15 minutes with cleaner and a mop later, and well. Vet appointment is at 9:30 tomorrow. She was so hopeful that the normal poop this morning meant that things were on the mend, and so was I. Boy, were we wrong!

He's doing great though, wanted to play with my niece, still drinking normal amounts of water, and his appetite is good. He cried the entire time Little Dog was eating, because I'll still only let him have the rice/chicken/sweet potato combo and she gets fed raw. I'll post more updates after vet's tomorrow. I'm waiting for him to provide another sample for us to take with.

Some odd news, the exploding poop problem was the same thing that happened last time, so he got the same drugs (metro) and a bland diet for a few more days.

But a weight check showed he'd dropped 7 pounds and that was not just from having the runs for a few days. He has some hair thinning that I'd been watching on his back. Since he's not a dilute, CDA chances are pretty small. Anyways, his vet is running some bloodwork, including the thyroid tests and a liver panel to see what's up. The thinning coat on a red Dobe who's always had a good coat combined with weight loss is making me wonder. We should have some results in tomorrow, we got in just in time before they sent the blood off for today.

Glad they caught the symptoms...good vibes for him that it's nothing to worry about or an easy thing to treat.

I adore my vet. They are very careful. And yeah, I'd been watching his coat for a little while, and he was due for his annual checkup this month anyway. The thinning coat and flaky skin looks a lot like the hypothyroid symptoms Logan had. Although hypo usually has a weight gain, not a weight loss, Griff's vet said some dogs will actually lose weight.

Should have some lab results early this afternoon. I'm not too worried right now, I really think it's probably just a thyroid issue since he was low-normal on his last bloodwork. Now that he's getting older, his thyroid may just be checking out. Griffin's feeling good and scarfed down his breakfast. The meds are working too, no episodes since yesterday morning.

Yup, probably thyroid. Glad you caught it.

Ear rubs to the boy.

We have normal poop! Haha, this is the only place where I can write a sentence like that and not have everyone think I'm crazy. Going to start adding kibble back in tonight.

But no blood results yet, maybe the lab's backed up because of the holiday. It looks like I'll be waiting till Monday for his results.

I hate waiting. Not good at it, at all.

Glad he's back to normal poo, though.

I celebrate solid poops myself these days ...throwing parties for wee wees outside and celebrating normal poop! It's got to be a happy new year!

What is the news with the blood work results?

Nothing yet. I'm going to call this afternoon if I don't hear from them this morning. The lab could just be backed up because of the holidays, but I'm getting impatient. I know he's underweight and I want to get him started on thyroid meds, if that's what it is.

And Griff's going to need to gain back the 7 lbs. If it is thyroid, and he starts meds, will he put the weight back on through his normal diet? Or should I increase the amount of food he gets? I've had a young dog who was chronically underweight due to stress and fear issues, and he was still growing too, but that was more a matter of increasing food to match what he was burning off. I don't want to accidentally make Griff gain too much weight. He has Wobblers and doesn't need to carry extra lbs.

Griff's back on mostly kibble and a little bit of rice and chicken to make the switch off the bland diet easier. I won't add his raw bones back in till next week. No point in risking another eruption.

Hmm, if it is thyroid (and as you said, they usually gain weight with hypothyroid) and you get his meds adjusted/values back to normal, he should gain the weight back just with his normal ration, yes.

Are you certain he's not in any pain, from his Wobbler's? I know it's near impossible to get animals in pain to keep weight on--they just sort of burn it all up, fighting thru the pain.

And I guess he's been checked for internal parasites, including Giardia and Coccidia, on a regular schedule, huh? Just trying to think of all the bases, here.

Liver and kidneys functioning fine, right?

Gawd, dogs drive us nuts, do they not?
