| I also wanted to thank the person who brought up yoga mats. That has been working great to cover up our kitchen floor so she doesn't slip!

| Sorry for the million posts, but I'm taking Brandy back to the vet today. When I came home from lunch she had thrown up all over in her kennel and had diarrhea. The poor girl was just standing there waiting for me because pretty much the whole kennel was covered. She rubbed her nose raw trying to cover it up. I immediately took her outside and she had all blood diarrhea. Called the vet and we're going in for 1:30.
I was pretty strong for my husband's surgeries even when having to learn how to use his PIC line, but I am honestly falling apart with Brandy. She's my baby and she doesn't understand what's going on.

She did jump down from the bed, which I didn't think she'd do so we're going to have to come up with a solution to that. I know we can NOT have her jumping around. I think we may just disassemble the bed and put the mattress right on the floor. I am crating her during the day which she's not used to, so I'd hate to have to crate her at night too. That's just too much crate time imo. | Yup, Whip and I had mattress on the floor going on, for a few months, for her recovery.
About Brandy's GI upset--it's likely the Rimadyl, that's very common with most NSAIDs.
I hope she gets sorted and the dog doc gets her feeling better real quick.

| We're back from the Dr. She said it could be one of two things or both. The Rimadyl of course is suspect, but she didn't have trouble with it for her tooth so they can't say 100% that's it. The other thing she said it could be is stress induced colitis. So we'll be stopping the Rimadyl for now and will not be keeping her in the crate anymore when we're gone. We'll be buying baby gate(s) and keep her restricted to the main area of the house. Blocking off the bedrooms and basement, so she doesn't have stairs or beds to jump on. I'm also going to put big boxes on the couch to keep her off when we're gone. I'll also be going home more often than just at lunch. Thank goodness my boss is so understanding.
She does want us to start the Tramadol again with the Gabapentin, because she doesn't think the gabapentin is enough on its own for the pain. We also have a bunch of other meds to make her tummy feel better.
I do have to say that I really like this Dr. She even gave me her home number and cell number in case I needed to call her tonight. She's just a really caring person...it made me cry lol.

| Quick Brandy update. She's doing pretty good, hasn't had anymore bloody diarrhea since about 7:30 last night. We finally got her to take her meds at about 9:30. She was not interested in food at all, not even lunch meat, but she finally decided them hidden in wet dog food seemed good.
She slept great last night and this morning seemed hungry. I gave her a little more wet food, like the vet said and she was looking for more so that made me happy. She was resting comfortably on her bed when I left for work this morning and I'll be going home every two hours to check on her.
Thank you all for your kind words, advice and support. I really don't know what I'd do without DT!

| Brandy actually tried to take a few steps on her poor leg last night. I don't know if I should encourage that or not. (Guess I don't really have a choice, she'll do what she wants lol)
Her tummy's been doing much better and she's eating like a horse again. I know we'll have to watch that since she's not as active as normal. Don't want her gaining weight on top of everything else.
I've gone back and forth on whether or not we want to take her to my mom and dad's for christmas (or have them come to our house). It's about a 45 min drive and she doesn't mind the car. I've already talked to my mom and they're ready to block off all their stairs and keep the doggie door closed. I'm leaning toward taking her, because I think the good outweighs the bad in this case. She loves her grandma and grandpa and I think it will be good for her to get out of the house. Every car ride she's had lately has ended up at the vet, so I think it would be good for her to go someplace that's fun and stress free.
Now whether or not we go to IL for the in-laws christmas (a 5.5 hour drive) is another thing. My MIL asked if she could just pay to put her in a kennel for the weekend. I'm like WTF, are you kidding me!? I would NEVER leave her at a kennel in the shape she's in. I'm going to talk to the specialist about it when we see him on the 26th. It could get interesting....

| | Lil Pup | I am new to DT and joined because we are in a similar scenario to your family and Brandy! I completely understand how you feel in so many ways! I read every post on this to help with our scenario as well! I hope and pray that nothing but good things come your way from here on out for your family and Brandy! Thank you for sharing and it's great to see all the supportive responses compared to some other places I've tried to share and people tend to have little to no compassion for each individuals circumstances and have ended up in tears a few times!!
Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas/Holiday season! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

| 12-26-12 We had our appointment with the specialist this afternoon. Friday, the 28, Brandy will be going in to have a TPLO. He feels that she has probably torn her meniscus too, because she still will not put any weight on that leg. Since that's the case, surgery is a must and we decided to get it done as soon as possible. Her other leg is strong right now and we really want to keep it that way!
I felt really good about this doctor. He does 20-30 of these surgeries a week and has an awesome success rate. He said that he never really has to see his patients again after this unless the other leg goes out which is always a possibility (knock on wood!). The hospital that they're at is honestly better than some of the human clinics I've been in.
I'm still scared and nervous, but feel good as I can about it. We we drop her off on Friday and pick her up on Sunday.
Please cross your fingers and paws for Brandy!
(Also my husband is in a job interview right now, so please send some positive vibes for that too!)

| | Alpha | Fingers crossed for you guys. So glad you have found confidence in Brandy's surgeon.
(Darcy had her other leg operated on last Thursday. She went for her 6 week check up and her first leg had healed so well they decided to operate that afternoon.
I picked her up the next morning and again she was putting weight on her leg when I walked her to the car, she was also fine in herself.
Its a week later and she now only has a very slight limp.
I have stuck rigorously to her rehabilitation therapy which has definitely helped.
The following site contains useful rehab information for cruciate patients and is free to join. TopDog Rehab Center
You get a weekly emails on things to do that week (cold therepy, hot therepy, massage etc) to aid recovery plus videos of how to perform them.
Positive vibes sending for your hubby too |
