| What health tests should be done when you don't know a dogs history? Not sure if this is the right place so feel free to move it.
Anyways I got Rowan from someone who decided that they couldn't handle him and his sister. The story they gave me was that they had the 2 pups shipped over from the states had them cropped, and Rowan neutered. I'm still not clear if they came with cropped ears and they paid extra or they had them done here. They gave me his vet records which included some shots and his neuter, nothing about his ears (would there be records?) they also said that they had recently had newborn twins (so they purchased the dogs knowing they were pregnant) and 6 horse on a horse farm. Apparently he was good with the horses and cats though the way she said he was good with cats kind of had me thinking she had no idea, figured he was young enough to try to get him used to them (he's not bad but not great) and I just introduced him to horses this week and I don't think he knew what they were. The breeder they said they got him from I can't find any mention of (Amingford) who was apparently on kijiji which gives me warm fuzzies -.- this was after I got him home.
Sorry that was kind of long, just wanted to give some background. Anyways my worry is that I know nothing about any test he/his parents had. I'm assuming he doesn't have vwd just because his ears are done and he's neutered, which can't be done if he has it right? He is also starting to lose his hair on his neck and I'm pretty positive it's not from his collar which he doesn't even wear all the time. I thought it might be an allergy (he had a little bit of dry skin and eye boogies) so switched him to a grain free salmon and potato which he's doing wonderfully on hug cut back on eye goop and can't believe how shiny his coat is. He's only 10 months old.
So the hair loss can be a sign of hypothyroidism I think same with the flaky skin though he doesn't seem to have any other symptoms. I want to get him tested for anything that he should be tested for anything that is pretty standard for dobes. I want to focus on anything that might actually be wrong like thyroid but I'm not sure exactly what to ask for, I'm pretty sure I saw on another thread that you have to specifically ask or a certain series of test? Or maybe I'm thinking of another one. Either way I'm everything done as best and accurately as possible so any insight will be wonderful. My vet doesn't have much experience with dobermans and the main reason I go there is because my cousin is a vet tech there. Also on that note anyone in the Toronto Brampton area know if a Doberman experiences vet? I'm going be moving next month and I want as much info beforehand as possible.
Sorry this is kind of muddled and all over the place :p I'm not the best at keeping everything concise... My emails are usually amusing lol
Thanks

| I would never assume a Dobe didn't have VWD. The clotting factors can change as they get a bit older and I might not be wording that right. I believe there are Dobes who have been fine with crop/dock but still dned up being clinically affected or just affected. Plus any time you go into a vet, they almost always are going to ask you. If you don't know, they almost always want to run the ELISA test which doesn't tell us the gene information (carrier, clear, affected).

| I'd test him now. You can order the test from either VetGen or Vetnostis, and just follow the directions that come with it. It's a DNA test, so his age won't affect the results. And yes, better safe than sorry, just in case (for example) he's in an accident, or ingests something and needs emergency surgery.

| Vetnostics is a lot less expensive then Vetgen, and they get you the results very quickly.

| | denormalized | I would get a CBC if you can afford it - just to be sure his kidneys and liver are doing fine, and there is nothing terribly wrong with anything in his blood.
Get the MSU thyroid panel or Dr Dodds' 5 test panel if you think there is thyroid concerns but most vets won't test under 12 mths old..
Get the genetic vWD test.

| I'm glad you asked this, I was just about to for my own rescue boy. I knew vwd and hips/elbows since I want to get into competetive stuff, but wasn't sure on others.

. | Should I just wait 2 months? Or I'll just ask at his next appointment and see what they will do or what they think of the hair loss. Quote:
