My girl having tooth extracted

I took our girl to the vet yesterday morning because I noticed a brown spot on her tooth last week. Well it's not just tarter, it's a hole in her second premolar on the top. Anyway, the vet said it needs to come out. I know he will go over everything with me on Wednesday when we take her back, but I'm nervous about it. I know any time they go under anesthesia there is a risk. Is this procedure dangerous? I assume he will do all necessary pre surgery testing as far as bloodwork goes. I will ask him about all of that, but I am a nervous dobemom right now. Anyone have any experience with this?

Our girl Brandy just had a tooth extracted on Wednesday, you can check out the link here:
Dark Gums - 2nd Opinion?

She's doing really well now, eating like a horse! We're still letting her food soak and are keeping her away from her Himalayan chews. I want to make sure that gum has plenty of time to heal.

Good luck to your girl!

Amy had a back molar taken out at 9.5 y/o...it was huge with 4 long angled roots.
Wouldn't pull out, till it was cut in half...surgery lasted 1.75 hours with other stuff, while under.

After the operation, her core temperature was down -6 degrees, and we covered her with blankets, which helped.
Our girl was not crate trained, so I insisted her tooth removal would be first one scheduled in the morning, because it was my intention to sit at Vets with her...coming out of anesthesia, as it wore off...after several hours, but her back legs still not working, all doped up.
Vet knew she was in good hands, so we took her home, late the same day, using a towel under her belly, to walk out to the car & up the house steps. assisted.

At home, wrapped Amy up completely on the leather couch, helping her organs regain temp.
In the middle of the night, she got off the couch by herself and kissed Dad sleeping on the other end.
Out for potty at 3:30 am, back on the couch till 7...then Mom made her oatmeal porridge.
Start of day2, she was pretty much herself.

Best wishes, for your girl !!

I took Reba in for a runny nose, this vet pulled 2 front teeth, cleaned teeth(which she didn't need), took xrays, swab samples all for 750.00 I was pissed she went this far, nothing was wrong with her, gggrrr. Reba was 10, got her home, she walked like a drunk, found out they had her on morphine! Make sure you like and trust your vet. I will never go back to this vet again, she has a reputation of spending YOUR money!

I do trust my vet. He said she only needed the one tooth removed. He showed me the hole and said if it didn't come out then it would become painful because of roots being exposed. He didn't think she needed a dental or X-rays. I brush my dog's teeth regularly but for whatever reason the hole developed.

Hang in there. A bad tooth must come out or it could lead to something worse and more painful.

Thinking good thoughts for your girl.

Indy is 9 and just had a couple of back teeth extracted. He was a little woozy the first day and fine the next. I would highly suggest you have heart enzyme test done prior to the procedure. I had Indy in his winter coat so he would not get chilled. Make sure the doc sends you home with pain meds and antibiotics. Indy was not supposed to have canned food but I could soak his kibble. I brought home some quality beef broth for him to have if he didn't feel like eating and used it to soak his kibble. He is actually much better now, lively plays with his toys, eats great and his breath smells good!

Thanks everyone for all the well wishes. You guys are terrific! Doc said she did great with the procedure. She was a little loopy when we first got home this evening, but she's doing better now thank goodness. I soaked a little bit of kibble in water and mashed it up with a fork and mixed in a small amount of canned food and she ate well. He said to start out with small amounts of food, so that's what we'll do. She's zonked out now. He did send pain pills and antibiotics home for her to take. Thanks again!

Kaylee had a carnassial extracted a few months ago (public service announcement - deer antlers are NOT safe!) .... she bounced back pretty quickly. Had to eat canned food for awhile, that was about the extend of it.

Priscilla had two dental surgeries (while she had cancer, even with lung mets). The option was to leave her in pain and keep her on antibiotics. Even with all that going against her, she did amazing and it was so nice to get rid of that pain for her.

Glad to hear she did okay! Sometimes I think surgery is more stressful on the owner than it is on the dog.

Griffin fractured his back molar, and had to have it removed. The break was diagonally up the tooth, under the gum line. If it wasn't treated, it would have formed an abcess and those can cause fatal infections if they spread into the jaw bone. So out with the tooth!

Surgery for that one took about an hour and a half. It had three roots and they had to cut the tooth in three pieces to extract it. He had dissolving stitches and they did give him pain relievers to go home with. Tramadol, I think. He was also on antibiotics for a bit. I had him on a mix of boiled chicken and wet dog food for about a week so that he didn't have to chew. Griff wasn't bothered by any of it, but he did wander around like a stoned drunk when I brought him home. I just put up a baby gate to keep him off the stairs.

I just noticed this on my Dobe - Zeke on Monday. My wife took him to the vet today and he will need his tooth pulled. Poor guy, he shows no problems and eats like a champ, but all I saw was a brown spot on the tooth. Surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday. It'll be ~$700 estimated right now.

Thanks! He's doing great, no pain, no signs of anything. If I didn't inspect his mouth we may have not known for a long time. Surgery is Wednesday, so hopefully it will be smooth and easy beside the bill of course.

Brandy's was right around $700 too! She also had a teeth cleaning and skin tag removal along with taking out the bad tooth.

So, he's doing fine. He was a bit lethargic for a day but all seems well. Doctor said keep him on soft food for a couple of days, which to my wife meant for at least a week They also aspirated 3-4 lipomas and they all came back benign. I do agree it seems a bit pricey for what they did. Time to look into pet insurance I guess. Thanks for the kind wishes

Feverone, what part of Ontario are you in? I am in Nemarket (north of Toronto) and I just got quoted $800-1200 to remove a molar from my dogs mouth. I would love to get an estimate from your Vet and I would gladly travel there to have the proceedure done if I was going to save that much money.

Can you post the name of your Vet?

Thanks
