| How do I know if my dog is overweight? My red male Rommel just turned a year last week and I am starting to wonder if he is too heavy? I weighed him two weeks ago and he was 93 lbs. I've never had a male before and don't know where he should be at. I only have my female to compare him to and she is very slim and fit at 55-60lbs. He is so much wider in the hips and his whole trunk. I don't know if that's the way males are or if he's getting too heavy.
I know every dog is different but if he is starting to get overweight I want to make changes now so he continues to be healthy. Any advice or feedback would be welcome! |

| He could stand to lose a few pounds, in my opinion, but he's not obese.
Personally, I like to be able to faintly see the last rib and easily feel the ribs.

It certainly doesn't look like he is terribly overweight. Is he active? I guess I just have a lean guy- it is going to be hard to put any fat on his lean body

| If he's 93 now he should more likely be between 85 and 90, sometimes three pounds makes a big difference.
He should overall have a more defined waist, right now he is just shy of being a solid tube all the way down when he should tuck in at the sides and a bit more in his belly.
This is mabel, she's 24.5" and does best between 56-58 pounds, yes 2 lbs makes a difference on her! In this pic she is 55#, she just lost some weight and is gaining it back...
I dont have any good above her shots, but you can see how she has a defined waist/tuck in this one, when she breathes hard or gets a drink of water I can just faintly see where most all her ribs are, ideally it would be just the back half of her ribs i'd be able to almost see, but again she's gaining weight back.
And this is a too skinny waist (for comparison) If he starts looking like this he needs more food.

| Oddly enough, of all my pictures I do not have one better than this one. Still, you can see his waist, tuck, and a hint of ribs. Untitled by PatchworkRobots, on Flickr

| Thank you for the feedback! Rommel will start his diet tomorrow! He is very active but I'm fairly certain we've been over-feeding him. Unlike our girl, he has an unstoppable appetite. Thanks again! |

| Spock is 27" tall, I believe, and has been at 85 lb. since 1-1/2 y/o no matter how much he eats! Here are a few shots of him.
Eva, on the other hand was at 57 lb. when we adopted her 4 months ago. She has a real appetite and has gained about 8 lbs. (now 65 lbs.) since then. Now she's slightly overweight and we might have to separate her at feeding time so she doesn't eat Spock's food along with hers! I think her ideal weight is 60 lbs.
Eva Pre Adoption at HADR:
Eva 4 months later loosing tuck... (whoops- she's happy, though!) |

| My past Dobe, Satan AKA "Fat Boy" at one time was 114 lbs. His parents where 50 and 60. He was active as a pup, but when he got out of his teen stage, he was down to 90. Still a big boned guy, but the pounds he lost showed in his belly, he could have used a tummy tuck. Not sure why he grew so big in his pup years, he did not over eat, he was a happy boy, had alot of exercise. |
