| Vaccination perspectives How many dobies out there are vaccinated for Lyme?
My boy is. We go EVERYWHERE! He is treated every 3 weeks with flea/tick topicals. I haven't seen a tick on him yet, BUT I want as much of a wall between him and lyme disease. Seeing clinical lyme disease on an almost daily basis, I would rather have as much of an arsenal against it-especially because he will be, well, doberman sized- treatment may be costly.
Also, I vaccinated him for Influenza being that he does go everywhere, and gets into everything who knows what other dog isn't vaccinated and shedding disease- especially in pet friendly stores/areas. He has had intranasal bordetella as well.
Does anyone agree or disagree with vaccinating for certain things?
I'm just wondering about different vaccination opinions of other dobie owners.
I do have to mention that I didn't let him have everything at the same time. Dobies are way too sensitive to let that happen.

| Mine don't get Lyme vaccine because it isn't a huge problem where I live. However, all 3 of my dogs have gotten Influenza vacc. I work at a vet, so they come to work with me alot, not to mention I bring them everywhere with me, and I don't want to take the chance of them catching anything!

| Considering how many people I currently know have Lyme, I've considered adding it to Elka's vaccines. Is it a yearly shot? |

| I work for a veterinary hospital too, so my boy has to have the basics (dhlp-p, rabies, bordetella, influenza) but lyme isn't required to be there. He is influenza vaccinated for this reason. Lyme is a problem in my area but not everyone vaccinates for it because some don't feel it is necessary.
Lyme is at first a 2 part vaccine to boost immunity, but it is yearly after the second booster. Usually done with puppy boosters. Some come as a combination with distemper vaccine to be a one shot deal rather than 2 separate injections.
Waiting on this vaccine would not have gone over well with me and my lifestyle. There are way too many trails and too much wildlife around to waste time wondering what he might have festering.

| I only do minimal core vaccines. I don't give lepto, lyme, bordatella or corona. If Lyme was a huge issue in my area, I'd do more research. But we only give DHPP, a series of 3 as a puppy and then every 3 years. Rabies at 6 months, 1 year later and every 3 months.

| Same. I only give minimal core vaccines, DHPP and rabies. I used to do bordetella when we were doing obedience shows, but since we stopped, I've let it lapse.

I've switched my dogs dogs (and cats) to this schedule, excpet for the rabies, which is required annually where I live. My vet is not happy with me, and says that I cannot board my pets there if they don't have all their shots. However, I have found a local boarding kennel that will accept the three year interval between shots. I will, however, need to get Ilka a kennel cough shot before I board her for our Christmas vacation.

| I guess it does depend on your location. I do lepto- if he drinks out of a puddle in the middle of the woods, or happens to eat something urine contaminated, that is the last thing I need. If your lifestyle isn't going hiking once a week at least, I would see how it isn't needed. I have heard of the 3 year interval with dh(l)p-p vaccine. I guess it depends on your and your veterinarian's outlook. But yes rabies is given as a 1 yr the first year given and a 3 year vaccine thereafter.

| We've always done core + bordetella. Lyme isn't a huge problem where I live and neither are ticks, but the city is crawling with unvaccinated offleash dogs (illegally) and I don't fancy my dog catching something from them.

| I give core vaccines + Lyme. We have a tick issue here, so do what we can. I used to give Bordetella, but don't bother any longer. Just about every dog I have shown has gotten Kennel Cough once, vaccinated or not, and never again.

| Core (DHPP) puppy series, once as adult then every 3 yrs after that. The new DHPP recommended by the AVMA ARE 3 yr shorts now- I'd check with your vet. If I had a vet still insisting on one year boosters for all shots I'd seriously question how current they were on AVMA guidelines.
Rabies 1 yr for first shot, then every 3 yrs as by law here. No lepto, lyme, bordatella, etc and I live in the country, in the middle of nowhere with tons of wildlife. I am more concerned with auto immune problems and cancers from over vaccinating than I am about lepto exposure.
I do Frontline for the season but go 4-5 weeks for ticks for Lyme prevention. (Treatment if you catch it early is doxycycline for 4-6 weeks and that is cheap, so don't know what treatment OP is referring to? I do HW and tick borne 4 way test 2x year on my guys.)

| We do not. I've seen very little Lyme around here, but we'd vaccinate for it if that changed. We do core vaccines and titering.

| It depends on your region and how tick bourne disease rapidly spreads. it isn't cheap to treat a 80+lb dog, especially if you intend to titer the blood for what illness is suspected. Depending on the severity, kidneys could be negatively affected or worse... neurologic damage. because of the tick population in my area- and the terrible battle with FLEAS! I use Vectra3D every 3-4 weeks.
no fun.

| One would hope the veterinarian would examine the pet and get a thorough background of the last few months of the dog's life before "popping" off vaccinations AND a good dobie owner should know what their dog can and can't handle.
Most cases of lyme include a lethargic pet, lameness, fever, etc. not to mention any obvious ticks or scabs.
