Ripped Toenail

My 10-month-old boy ripped a toenail about 3 weeks ago. We went to the vet, had it cut back as far as possible, and were on antibiotics and pain meds for 1 week. As the nail has started to grow out, more pieces of it have broken off. Now, there is just a tiny bit of nail over the top of it and the rest is exposed quick.

I'm just wondering if his nail is healing/growing back in normally? It still bleeds almost every day, if he's the least bit active, and he's still licking it every day. It doesn't look infected to me (no redness or swelling) but I would sure feel a lot better if anyone else could tell me it took this long for their dog's nail to heal! Three weeks seems like a long time for no progress whatsoever.

Advance apologies for the gory picture.

I'd definatley schedule a recheck vet appointment with that much quick exposed just to be sure it's healing approriately and not getting infected.

That being said when my last dog went through a weird nail phase, she ripped a few layers/a chunk off one nail ( not anywhere as bad as your boy) but it took months of regrowth and normal cutting for the nail to not be flaky and peeling/cracking/breaking off again. Nails take time to regain strength and thickness imo and with as bad as his was it may take a long while and i'd def. try and find some safety/sanitation measures in the meantime.

Yeah, he did a pretty impressive job on that one.

You gotta find a way to keep him from continually licking it, even if that means wearing a sock and/or a cone of shame.

And I second the suggestion for a recheck, just to be sure you're on track, but this one will take a long time to totally heal.

Poor baby. I agree with everyone else. A recheck to the vet is in order. My last Dobe ripped her nail completely out on the hard winter ground. Never grew back and took a long time to heal. Nails are a tricky situation.

Magnum did the same a while back. Tore off the entire nail leaving only quick (and lots of blood) sticking out. I shared most of that story here somewhere, so I won't go into all of the details.
Vet cut the quick down to the toe, pain meds, antibiotics. Vet wanted it to 'breathe' so it stayed unwrapped as much as possible. Magnum being an OCD licker had to be supervised to stop him from licking. Dropped him off w/ Mom during the work day, picked him up at night. By the end of day 3 Magnum had the 'leave it' command down.
Anyhoo.... to your questions:
Vet said it was possible that it would grow back normal, it did. I kept it clean and sprayed Vetricyn (maybe woundkote) on it a couple of times a day.
It took weeks to grow out. It took a little time, but the hard black nail grew back to 'encase' the quick before there was much (if any) forward nail growth.
I don't recall pieces breaking off during the regrowth process. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.
All of that said, I don't know if it has something to do with what mine get fed, or other factors, but both of my Dobe's nails grow fast, like, should trim 2x a week fast...
How quickly do Silas' nails grow? It seems (has been 3 years) that Magnum's was further along by week 3, but... still doesn't mean yours is not 'on schedule' so to speak.
Magnum went back to the vet every week for a toe check until the nail had completely re-encased the quick. IIRC, that took about 6 weeks.
I would take him by the vet for a quick check. As I have only had one dog do this, and the vet has probably seen it MANY times he/she will be a better judge as to what 'normal' is.

Thanks for all the support and advice, guys. We've scheduled a recheck for this afternoon. The vet tech did not instill a lot of confidence when I called. All she said was, "Hmm. That's not normal. Maybe it's a Doberman thing." What?? Anyhow, we'll see how it goes.

@dax0402 The nail never grew back? Yikes. What did it look like?

@madmyk Silas leaves it alone when I'm home and I catch him trying to get at it It's while I'm at work during the day that I know he licks it. Won't leave socks on then either I might have to get creative, ask if I can bring him to the office with me, something ... Unfortunately, we're new in town, so I don't know anyone I can leave him with. Also haven't yet been able to find a vet I'm crazy about, as you could probably tell.

His nails do grow pretty quickly though. I'm trying to work back the quick on all his nails, so this sort of thing (hopefully) doesn't happen again. We're trimming them at least twice a week. I'm guessing the pieces broke off this nail because the split was below the skin?

She just was without a nail on that foot. Finally healed up after a period of time. But, when it happened, never thought I would get it to stop bleeding. Ended up wrapping her whole foot for a few days. That was fun!

yep, happened to Q last year. Takes a while to heal.

Look to the bright side - the nail did grow back and its now the easiest one to dremel and keep short

Wow, I've had two dogs take off toenails, but neither one looked as raw and sore as that. Hope the vet can do something to make him feel better, and help the healing along.

Yep, been there done that, it will grow back, ugly, they don't care, but the licking is their way off getting over it.

Thor ripped his nail in 09. He took out the whole side exposing the quick. The vet cut it all the way back to the paw under anesthesia. I went back for weekly rechecks and had to keep it clean and prevent him from licking. So that meant muttluk boots when outside and socks fastened with Velcro inside. The socks so at least some air could get to it but it was the only way to keep him from licking it. I think they even had me soak it in betadine solution. Here are some progression pictures.
The day it was cut back: 10/3/2009

10/9/2009

2009/10/16

2009/10/29

And here is a picture of Cleo's toenail or rather absent toenail. She had an infection we couldn't heal after weeks of antibiotics and betadine soaking and ended up removing the nail all the way into the nailbed. She had trouble walking for a few days because I'm sure even with meds it hurt, but the nail grew back all the way eventually.

Thank you sooo much for posting those pictures, Thor_Red! I can see that Silas is behind schedule his toenail looked the same as Thor's on the day he got it cut back, but it now looks more like Cleo's. (His nail actually was split pretty badly, along both sides. Those side pieces broke off as the nail has started to grow out, leaving his quick more exposed now that it was when it was first cut.) Do you remember how long it took for Cleo's toenail to grow back in? Was it troublesome or fairly easy?

It sounds like I'm going to have to find a way to keep him from getting at it while I'm at work during the day. I'm not familiar with muttluk booties do they fasten pretty securely? He's a good little chewer, can untie knots and undo velcro and just about everything else.

I don't remember exactly how long but it took quite a bit longer than Thor's. Her paw was wrapped up by the vet for the first few days and then I had to keep it dry and clean and away from her licking as well. Here is a link to the muttluks Product Landing Page - Muttluks
They use velcro so you might have to utilize a combination e-collar and boot. I would definitely have the vet take another look at it. My vet rechecked both their toenails weekly at least until the quick is no longer exposed. You don't want to get an infection in there.
I would not leave the boot on him while in the house however since no airflow can get to the wound. That's why I use a sock on Thor. It's frustrating to keep them away from their toes but necessary while healing. I use a tennis sock and velcro closure you can get for cable management. just be careful so he doesn't rub that spot sore. That happened to me a few times and then you are trying to keep him licking that spot.

We are going to see the vet in a few hours. I am going to ask her, while we're there, to schedule us for weekly follow-up visits.

I'll try to come up with a more creative sock fastener, and I think I might just bring him in to the office with me for at least a few days, so there's no unsupervised time.

Of course this all would happen at the height of his can't-sit-still-for-2-seconds, can't-leave-ANYthing-alone phase.

I feel your pain. It's incredible difficult to keep both of mine, but especially Thor away from his toes. At one point my vet suggested getting Wasabi mustard (really spicy) and smearing some on top of the foot. Not where the sore is a little higher up. So I went to the grocery store over the weekend and bought some. Monday morning I called my vet to tell him. "The dobes wanted me to call and say thank you, the mustard was delicious"

Hahaha! I've thought of that -- getting something yucky to put on Silas' toes -- but I figured he would just decide that whatever I got (bitter apple, Tabasco sauce ...) was a super awesome new treat for him.

That is how Magnum's mind works. Doesn't seem to matter how nasty/bitter/hot my Magnatard loves it. I have about 20 assorted "flavors" of stuff we have tried. Of course, this is the dog that will counter surf for hot peppers..?

Thanks again for all your help, everyone. After a visit to the vet, we are back on antibiotics and back on the cone of shame. (But, this time, we got a fancy inflatable one that isn't nearly as unbearable. Silas thinks it's a chew toy right now, and thinks I am the meanest person alive for putting a new chew toy around his neck, where he can't get at it.) The vet says what little remaining nail he has is going to come off soon (it wiggles when you touch it), so things are going to get worse before they get better. Good news is, she doesn't think it's hurting him much, despite how it looks.

You have to tell me how well that cone works. I just might have to invest in one with my big dufus Thor. Of course when its the front paw it gets really tricky. Mine mastered the art of pushing the cone back agains a doorframe and with their long legs managed to get to it and if that failed, well they still had each other to lick it

Inflatable collar is practically useless Silas can easily contort himself into a little pretzel and get at his foot; all the collar does is slow him down a little and make him work a little harder. Maybe that will be deterrent enough.
