This all started around April 24, we have been to the vet at least 6 times for it. The bumps started on his neck, so we saw the vet then she prescribed two medicated baths a week and SimplicF (sp?) for ten days. Then bumps mostly went away after we finished antibiotics, but then two days later came back just as bad. So we went back to the vet was told to continue the baths and then started another 10 days of SimplicF, on day 4 bumps where even worse then before. So I called the vet, she told me to finish the antibiotics and then we would meet for another check up. So we keep giving him the antibiotics but now the bumps have turned itchy, he is itching and chewing till he cries. So at that visit, she suggests he has a food intolerance for chicken, (changed his food to PureVita Salmon and Sweet Potato) and she told us to continue his baths and changed his antibiotic to Clavamox twice a day, as well as Benadryl three times a day. Axel has had no change since starting antibiotics and is still itchy, so I called the vet yesterday and she now thinks it could be scabies, so she had us give him Revolution and told us if it was scabies that it would start to improve within 4 days and if it does not then she recommend we see a dermatologist for him. Has anyone had any experience like this? What do the bumps look like to you? Any help or suggestions would be great, thank you

Axel is now 13 weeks and 27lbs.

Did the vet do a skin scrape? Right now, my GSD puppy is being treated for suspected sarcoptic mange (scabies). A skin scrape didn't show anything, but she was itching like crazy. She has had two ivermectin shots, a week apart.

ETA: If is it sarcoptic mange, you can catch it, too.

the vet has done two different scrapings and both have only had Bactria on the slides.

Yes, I know we could catch scabies from Axel and I have been very watchful for itchiness in the family.

Go to a dermatologist! Day clinics sometimes throw around antibiotics at everything, when they should be trying to diagnose and treat. No offense, but if they truely thought it was a bacterial skin infection, your pup should have been on 6 weeks of strict antibiotics . 10 days here and 10 days there could very well be harming the situation, as bacteria become resistant. I would just go to a derm doc and be done with it.

Looks similar to what I've been fighting with with Ripley. He went through three months of antibiotics, was fine for a while, and now it looks like it is coming back. His issue was just called a bacterial infection. It might not be the same, as Axel's bumps look a lot more prominent and larger than Ripley's, but it looks similar.

And I wish I could help. I want to take Ripley to a dermatologist and get this solved once and for all (if possible). Vets just prescribe antibiotics, while helps while he's on them and for a bit after, but I don't want it continually coming back after a while.

I would suggest demodex before Sarcoptic (scabies) since it sounds like this has been going on for some time and he doesn't appear to have any raw, bloody skin which is common in sarcoptic.

Did you happen to bathe your dog before the skin scrape? I've been told that skin scrapes from the ear usually detect mites when a regular skin scrape is not definitive.

But yes, like someone else said, Sarcoptic is HIGHLY contagious. And it does indeed pass to humans. It's not pleasant.

I'd also agree with the recommendation for a dermatologist. It does look a lot like allergies.

I agree, 10 days of antibiotics does nothing but possibly cause resistant bacteria.

Exactly what are you bathing him in? If those bumps are not raw, after bathing and rinsing, use a 1 cup vinegar in 1 gallon water and after he is thoroughly rinsed off, do a final rinse or sponge this mix on and leave it. It is easy to leave shampoo on a dog after rinsing...you have to rinse till there are no tiny bubbles coming off the coat and this takes longer than you think. This rinse will make the skin inhospitable to yeast and bacteria.

He is awfully young to have allergies, too. Not sure on that one.

This morning (2 days after Revolution), his bumps are now 60% better. Thank you for all your help and suggestions. If in fact the bumps do come back then we will start looking for a derm. Dr. But right now, that is just not an option my family. Every Derm. I have called is $140 for consultation and $200 to $600 for skin tests. I even called UC Davis Vet Teaching hospital and they where the same price. Does anyone know of a more affordable Derm Dr. in the Sacramento,CA area?

Any update did the Revolution in fact cure the problem. I have a 5.5 month old and am waiting for the vet to open in the morning however this looks exactly like what is going on with Enzo.

That's exactly what Bacchus looks like after he eats something with corn in it. He has a food allergy to corn.

I would consult a vet before trying Revolution. It shouldn't be harmful as it is a flea and heartworm topical. However, what are you feeding Enzo?

Skoll has something similar but only a few of them; 2 on his back, 1 on a foreleg and 1 on the hind leg of that same side. He's also got some chin acne. When we were last at the vet about a week ago she poked around at them and called them warts but said that they didn't seem to be causing a problem. She did recommend bringing him back if they start bothering him.

Skoll is also very itchy but he's not scratching at the lumps. He recently just switched from Science Diet to EVO so the vet wants to see if the food switch will help both lumps and discomfort before doing anything else. She did check him for the symptoms of mange and other problems before sending me home, though. I'm to keep them updated on his progress. I'm also planning on having them run a thyroid panel sometime this month and some other tests to make sure it's not anything commonly posted here.

As someone mentioned earlier lots of dobes have food allergies. Mine had the same skin issue, we switched him to a grain free food (blue buffalo) and they immediately went away (also had to change his treats). Hope that's your issue and its not something more complex

I thought I just read elsewhere that you were feeding Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy... is this correct? That is free of corn and wheat, but not grain free. Blue's grain free line is called Wilderness, and the Wilderness Puppy does not come in a large breed formula.

Dobies seem to have sensitive systems in general. I don't think these allergies are mainly food related, but seasonal, or to something else in the environment, OR an ingredient in the food that could be causing the sensitivity.

The food just may not agree with him, but you could offer support for his skin using Omega 3 capsules for support. My boy is on them, and has been to keep his skin and coat lush, along with other great benefits. He likes them too, and plays with them before eating them. He reminds me of a dolphin.

Enzo is currently on Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy. We have contacted the vet and have an apt on Friday. I am going to get him so Resolution regardless as he is going in for his neuter this month and fleas scare me! I figure better to be safe then sorry. I also have an English Bulldog and a Boxer so I am used to the allergies. My vet advised to give Benadryl just to play it safe but there is no redness on his pads or ears and no swelling. It seems with him it's more bumps on his chest that are like little welts and has almost what looks like little pimples on his belly. It didn't really start till we came back from a run out in the snow the day before yesterday. He is for sure itchy. My vet has advised if anything seems to get worse to bring him in right away but so far he is just itchy and bumpy. I feel bad for him, I am not expecting anyone to provide advise that would prevent us from having to go to the vet we are going regardless just looking to see what other people have seen and if this is a common thing, I feel so bad I might take a quick run to the pet store and get some shampoo with oatmeal at the same time I don't want to aggravate anything any further, I am trying to build all information I can to ensure that when we meet with the vet we address all possible causes.
