Chin irritation

Hi All,

Kane developed a skin irritation a few weeks ago. It is a lump type of mass, my wife calls it a large pimple and I left it alone thinking he scraped his chin somewhere but it does not seem to be going away. It does not bother him when we touch it and he never scratches it. Any ideas?

Chin acne is very common in young dobes--you should use metal bowls, not plastic, and wash the bowls with soap and water regularly. Another thing that helps is to wash your dog's chin after meals to get rid of any food which might be caked on. You can use anti-acne pads to help clean the area too.

If you still have trouble clearing up the area, you can use a topical antibiotic, but a vet can give you a specific treatment to use for a particularly tough case to clear up.

google and read up on Puppy Dermatitis, acne. ' purplish-red bumps on chin and lower lip'

Talk to your Vet about an ointment with Zinc in it.

Hugz to Kane!

Thanks for the reply. It looks for like blisters, but it probably is acne. I will see about keeping his bowl and chin more clean and see check for progress.

Bacchus gets a breakout from time to time. I know the drill about the bowls and chin wiping and yet it still will happen. Sometimes your vet will give you an antibiotic for it and it usually clears up.

My first puppy had very similar pimples, till she died at 9 y/o.
- we made the mistake, of using cheaper food / based on the advise of our breeder

Next pup...started with same kibble brand and same pimples.
Switched to nothing but the most premium Holistic/Organic kibble & pimples disappeared completely.

Later our Holistic Vet said the earlier lower quality kibble was causing the liver to overwork and the toxins where coming out as pimples on the soft & sensitive chin area.
- both dogs had stainless steel bowls, from day 1

sorry ...duplicate post / I will just edit and add more...

Chin pimple cleanup wise - my dobe has had good premium kibble results, with the following brands:
- Canidae
- Holistic Blend Lamb & Rice
- Go! Natural chicken & salmon
- Organix

I feel your pain, Bentley has HORRIBLE chin acne. Our vet gave us an anti-biotic to help clear it up and an anti-bacterial shampoo. Whenever he's done eating wash his chin off and dry it.

We're still fighting it, because Bentley is a SLOPPY eater and drinker. You can get stuff from the vet to help it, too.
