| | Lil Dog | question about his ears I have a 8 week doberman and the breeder cropt his ears and said he will have a little yeast infection. It smells bad. She said not to worry it will take care of it self. On Friday we are suppose to change his bandage and clean out his ear and do this for ever long it takes. The breeder said if i went to a vet she would give us medcine for his yeast infection but we dont need it. Is it supose to be smelly and a yeast infection? The breeder also said once it heals I could put a brace on it and it wont have a yeast infection. |

| Are the stitches out and the edges healed? When was he cropped? I don't think there should be a bad odor.

| None of that makes any sense what-so-ever. ANYTIME there looks or smells like infection with an earcrop they need to go to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

| | Alpha | Ditto - if there is odor, redness, or discharge in the ear, bring your pup to the vet. Ear infections can be very itchy and even painful for dogs. If the pup does have an infection, it SHOULD be on medication. Posting the ears will decrease the air flow to the ears, potentially making any infection even worse. I would take your pup to the vet ASAP! |

| | Alpha | Yikes!!!! Get that puppy to the vet....NOW! I don't know what kind of bandaging they've done to the ears but typically the ear should either be folded across the top of the head and taped or glued or up on a cup (taped and glued) with the edges exposed until the ear edge has healed enough to remove the sutures. That newly cropped edge should have exposure to the air.
If the ears smell the puppy needs to be checked now--the edges should not be infected and the interior of the ear should not be infected.
Let us know how this goes--but do get to a vet--you can lose an ear or pieces from the ear edge by letting infections go untreated. |

You said the breeder cropped his ears, did you mean this literally?? Did the breeder crop the puppies" ears? |

| | Alpha | Ahh, having a puppy newly cropped and not knowing what to do...I feel for you. I went through this myself not so long ago. (times 2!)
Normally, right after they are cropped, say up to 5 days, there is a irony smell from the open wounds, but nothing should smell bad.
When did the pup have it's ears done?
How are you "wraping" them?
Are the stitches healed? Are there scabs still?
How often are you changing the dressing?
Eaither way, you will need the help of a good Vet. Find one that knows something about ear cropping, and if you can't any Vet will do for now. If your pup's ears are infact infected, as my pups were, you need to see a Vet right now. Holding off any longer would be to risk your puppies ears and health.
You have a long road of posting ahead of you, and you will need some help. I suggest you stay in contact with this board. I know they helped me TONS! But first things first, get to the vets!

| | Lil Dog | I am taking hm in today. He is 8 weeks and they changed it on Friday and said not to change till next Friday. It does not look good to me. Breeder said it from other pup rubbing licking etc. I think it is from him scrathing himself .she said if my guys were to lick his wound it would be good for him. mine wont i dont want them to, she said yeast infection smell and normal for them to get it. after the wounds heal she said then air it for 3 days then you can use a brace and he wont have an infection then. The breeder also said that a vet would put him on mecine fo yeast but not necessary becauses it will go away. I hate to doubt a breeder when she been at it so long and I am new but I dont feel right. My vet said not good bring him in so I am. I trust her. |

| I hate to tell you, but I have no problem doubting her at all. I don't know of one REPUTABLE doberman breeder that lets a puppy go to it's new home until the ears are COMPLETELY healed after cropping and ready to be posted. That is usually around the 12-ish week mark. This experience is exactly WHY most breeders don't let puppies with un-healed ears go.
