Wow, that's scarey. In Texas, where I live there is no "keeping them away from mosquitos". I do try to keep the boys in the house during peak mosquito times, early morning, early evening, and night time. I only let them out to do their business and right back inside during these times. I think that is about all you can do to lessen the threat of bites.

Yes, when I was still working for the clinic while I was in college we were getting positives on dogs we knew had been given Heartgard regularly. The company would pay for treatment, but the dog still had to go through it. :( And this was a year ago, so I can only imagine it has gotten worse. Our local vet here is now recommending moxidectin rather than ivermectin. As far as I know there is only the Advantage Multi (topical) and ProHeart 6 (injection) that uses moxidectin. I'm still scared of the injection, so I've started using Advantage Multi rather than Heartgard. Interceptor and Sentinel (milbemycin) may also be something to look at. I've been lucky so far with Heartgard (just had all my guys tested earlier this month and all were negative), but I'm switching them all over now. I would personally recommend switching to something besides ivermectin (Heartgard) just from the amount of positive dogs I've seen on it. I respect the company for treating the dogs, but still. I don't want my dogs to have to go through the treatment, whether I have to pay for it or not!

Just got this today and was going to post it, but I will just add it onto this thread now.

Also posted the other day about the Heartgard scientist that is now suing Heartgard for not doing anything for years while knowing their heartworm preventative was not working well. Guess that is why they are "so good" to pay for the treatment of positive dogs.

Check this out, a lot of good information in it, includiing to run a 4Dx test every six months now. Heartworms are becoming a real problem again with resistent "super-worms".
