Ear Posting

My puppy is 16 weeks old and has a show crop. His ears are standing very well. How long should I continue posting? I would appreciate advice. Thanks.

Until all his adult teeth are in...around 6 months of age.

Welcome!

I would continue posting like Luvbird stated. Teething seems to affect the ears. Posting to 6 months is a good general rule. Sometimes its shorter, sometimes its longer for some dogs. When I think I'm done posting, I post them again just to make sure. You don't want to stop too soon.

How long have they been standing? Some puppies do finish early but they are the ones whose ears are standing before teething begins. Usually if they have started teething the ears will come down and you should post till after they have finished.

IMHO, beyond 6 months. Not all dobes mature at the same rate. Mine was particularly slow to mature. His ears were up and pretty at 15 weeks. By 8 months they were falling. When I had him neutered at 8.5 months, he still had baby teeth that the vet had to pull. Every dog is different. Allow the ears the chance to stand, when they start to fall, immediately retape. Give it another couple of weeks and try again. Show crops take a bit longer, sometimes up to 16 months. Depends on the dog. Shorter crops take less time but, I've seen these fall too. There are a lot of issues.... the crop itself, the ear cartilage of the specific dog, the line he/she was bred off of, the post-op recovery, and the dog themselves. Some dogs are just lazy. You can help the process by playing games.... follow the light, plucking popcorn at the dog when he/she isn't watching. Don't despair, most dobes have the ears up and pretty by 12 months. Good luck to you.
