Careless husband

I'm soooooo frustrated!! Ughh! My husband is so forgetful and careless. I remind him over and over about keepting doors shut, putting doggy toys away when he leaves the house, not leaving things out that are dangerous to Fiddler. Luckily nothing happened today, but my husband left a container of medications right on the edge of the kitchen counter. All Fid had to do was knock it over, chew on the container, eat the pills... and then you can picture the rest of the story...

I remind him and remind him. I put notes on the front door. We are going to get a puppy in the near future, and I swear I will never trust my husband alone with the puppy! I just don't know what else to do! If my husband leaves the house after me, I get nervous about whether he's leaving things out. I guess I could always have him lock Fiddler up when he is the last one to leave the house.. but wouldn't that be such a shame??? He is a grown man.. He's very smart... WHY can't I get him to be more cautious about such things? In the ideal world, the house would ALWAYS be spotless and nothing would EVER be out... but that's not the case in my house. Also, the house could be spotless and then my husband could still leave something out when I'm not looking...

I'm posting this on the health board because this is related to keeping my dog safe and healthy. If ANYBODY has suggestions/advice, please let me know! Sorry for the venting, but I"m at my wits end....

Sorry my house is full of idiots, I not only have a hubby, but 4 teenage sons. Not one of them "gets" it. They just want to go on pretending that we still have our Weimaraners who were 9 & 6 and NEVER touched anything. Todays example, I left home this am for work...my puppy still sleeping in his bed, and the boys home from school for a holiday, no one let Petey out when he got up....and the poor thing had an accident....first one in months. They are always mad at him for taking their clothing and shoes, PUT YOUR STUFF AWAY....I say it over and over and over. It gets really frustrating.

My husband left the gate open.. ONCE

After mowing, and then let the dogs out to potty. Thank god I followed them out because they ran right around the corner and out the gate like little hellions.
That was the first and last time. I am a meanie... but I chewed him up and down, didn't let him forget it for at least a week. They could have gotten lost, hit by a car, or worse yet, shot by a neighbor who didn't like dobermans.
This was about 6 years ago.. the lock is now always put back on the gate immediately. Hubby will never make that mistake again!

I might be able to send in copies of Cleopatra's vet bills after her car accident. That would scare him straight. Close to 5000 after all was said and done. Or the could have been vet bill from a rubber ball being thrown in my backyard from some neighboring kids. There's even been the death of a precious boy on the forum from eating a sock, even after surgery. I'm sure the $$$$ floating in front of his eyes will open them a little bit if the fear of them getting hurt or sick doesn't.

In a previous message it was stated that a dog died from eating a sock. I'm new to the forum, and so I didn't know the story. I just now did a search through the threads and used the keyword "sock." I read all about Nash's story and saw the video that was made in his memory. I cried through the entire video and my nose is still drippy. I'm going to share this story, the many comments that were posted online, and the video with my husband. Maybe, just maybe, this will make him pay a bit more attention. Thank you for sharing and my heart goes out to Nash's family. For those who are not familiar with the story about Nash, here are some old links that I pulled up...

It's been a rough weekend

Nash's story will bring the toughest of men to tears. My whole family is sock paranoid now with the puppy in the house. I'm sure your hubby will understand your need for constant reminders after that story.

A friend of mine and her hubby got a puppy after they had been married for a few years. He was a great guy, had a great job, but could be absolutely clueless at times. Naturally, he wanted to get a dog much more than she did. She finally had to tell him flat: this puppy was going to be the canary in the mine - if he wasn't going to do his part in raising, training and caring for this puppy, then no way in hell was she going to start a family with him. Didn't take him too long to become Mr. Responsible around the house...
