| Peeing while she sleeps I will of course ask the vet on Thursday, but am wondering if anyone else experienced this. Kade is three months old and we just today noticed that during the two naps she has taken so far she has wet the carpet. Most information on incontinence says it happens in spayed females or those who are at the end of a heat cycle. She hasn't reached either of those 'milestones' so I was just wondering if anyone had any experience or suggestions.
Thanks!

| It might be a Urinary Tract Infection...Suri just got over one and she was going pee in her sleep; it was uncontrollable. |

| | Alpha | Potential causes: puppy vaginitis & urinary tract infections are the more common causes.
Sometimes puppies can have abnormal anatomy such as ectopic ureters (the tubes from the kidneys to the bladder don't connect in the right place).
Your vet will check a urine sample (urinalysis) and see if there is evidence of infection - from there other tests may or may not be warranted (urine culture & sensitivity, contrast radiography of the urinary system).
Good luck.... hope it's something simple! |

| | Alpha | you beat me to the post
-- puppy vaginitis is very common. In many puppies it doesn't seem to cause them any problems, but in some it can lead to urinary problems.
A side note: for puppies with chronic vaginitis - they should go through their first heat cycle before spaying or they can have ongoing issues for the rest of their life. Bitches should never be spayed while they HAVE vaginitis.
Good luck at the vet! |

| What happens if your dog is male? Can it be the same deal? He usually has yellowish goo on his um...little guy in the morning and after a nap. The vet said not to worry about it, but I do occasionally.

| Thank you! I have been watching her like a hawk since we brought her home. It seems like one thing or another with her in the short time we've had her.
The first night she was here, she had a bm and I thought there was blood in her stool. We took the sample to our vet only to find out there was no blood, but she was infested with two types of parasites. We were livid! Our vet treated her with first dewormer and we went back to the couple we bought her from-they lied-previously swore that their pups had utd shots and health issues were fine.
I called the base vet to make sure they weren't lying about the first round of shots. Base vet tech said that he administered the first vaccinations on July 16 but did not treat for worms because "in this area we don't have a mosquito problem" When I told him I wasn't talking about heartworm, he just said "Oh." (This is why I will never take my dogs on base to the vet no matter how cheap it is.)
After her first dewormer, we noticed the mucus from the vaginitis and took her in right away. She was on amox twice a day until this past week.
The couple we bought her from just really made me mad. Their female is supposedly CKC registered and the father is a red male rescue so there were no papers and since we aren't showing or breeding her, we were fine with that. We visited their house- clean- backyard clean, pups living area was clean. I called our vet to see if he had treated the litter and he said no so I knew to verify any health info with the base vet then. I figured I could get a copy of the shot record, but because of privacy act and whatever system the vet uses, the best the tech would do was call our vet on the phone to confirm initial vaccination.
We called them after we found out how infested she was and left them a message telling them the situation. We stated that we weren't trying to get our money back, we just wanted them to know so that the remaining pups could be treated and that they could notify the other buyers. They also had a toddler still in diapers and we reiterated that worm eggs can live in the sand and be passed to their daughter. We asked them to call us back. Three times with no return phone call or acknowledgement of our attempts to communicate.
I looked them up and found out they were both active duty and where they worked. A week after our last call to their house we ran into them in the comissary. Talk about the deer in the headlights look. Those two figured that we were young and stupid and they could blow us off, but because Josh was in uniform, the husband realized they could be in deep doo doo. Josh chewed them out in the middle of the laundry detergent aisle.
I don't know what good it did and we wonder every day whether the other pups got treated or the other owners got notified. We even contemplated going back and 'rescuing' another pup from their house.

| | Alpha | Some degree of discharge is normal for intact (un-neutered males). If it is getting worse or if he has any other signs (redness, inflammation, trouble urinating, etc) then a trip to the vet is in order. |

| | Alpha | A note about "CKC" -- for most of us, this means CANADIAN Kennel Club.
There is a newer "registry" in the US that (by no accident, I'm sure) uses the abbreviation CKC: Continental Kennel Club. They are basically a joke (IMO). There are no real standards, the rules are pretty slack and their big marketing ploy is that they are cheaper than AKC. This is a registry that is used by BYBs/puppy mills to get around the AKC limited registration. I used to work at a vet clinic that saw a fair number of puppies from the 2 nearby pet stores. These puppies were all CKC (Continental)or APRI (America's Pet Registry, Inc.... another joke) registered. The unsuspecting new owners thought these registrations were equivalent to AKC registrations, as this is what is often implied by the pet stores, BYB,etc.
If you look under Doberman in the Continental KC standard it's pretty vague and they allow white, and there are NO faults or disqualifications -- since there are no conformation shows put on by this kennel club. |
