| Humans can not get Lyme disease from their pets. However, I am not sure if it can be transmitted from animal to animal. I would think not?

| | Alpha | Lyme disease is transmitted by deer ticks (not directly from animal to animal). It is believed that ticks must be attached for at least 24 hours to transmit lyme disease. So, checking over your dog after he/she's been out in the tall grasses/woods/etc. and removing ticks right away can also help prevent lyme disease (and from bringing potentially infected ticks into the house). |

| Lymes is only transmissable by deer tick. but MICE are the biggest carriers of deer tick. so just cuz you don't have deer knocking around in your yard, doesn't mean you and or Strike can't get lymes. in dogs it usually manifests itself as joint pain ( the spirochetes go after the joints) there is a canine lyme's vaccine out, so if you are concerned, you can have Strike vaccinated. the usual antibiotic is docycline and typically a 3 week course - lyme's is a nasty bugger to kill in dogs or humans.
do you think you or strike has lymes?

Like codysmom said, deer ticks are often on mice and other animals. People often incorrectly believe that because their dogs don't go into the "woods" they are safe, but ticks are commonly in grassy areas. Tick control such as frontline (which is the only tick product that is safe to use around cats), vaccination for high risk animals, and physically removing ticks can help prevent the disease. There are quick in-house snap tests (blood tests) available in many vet clinics so diagnosis can be much faster. And Doxycycline is the drug of choice for treatment. |

| My Weim Uno had the Lyme shot, my other one Mason had epilepsy so we didn't get it for him, huge mistake. He got Lyme and several times over the last year of his life he was on antibiotics, and ended up with arthritis in his front feet. I think he still had it when he died, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is what caused his seizures to cluster and get out of control his last day on earth. I took no chances and put the shot on Petey, and check him for ticks every single time we go out.

| Nope, I might be taking a short term foster who is being treated for it right now though, just needed to know before I put my family at risks.
