Really stupid frontline problem.

I was doing the dogs frontline and one of the cats picked a bad time to walk into the kitchen while I was doing Jordans. You all know how easy it is to part a dobermans fur anyway. He pulled up just a bit and basically the whole entire vial of it is on top of his fur and not on his skin. All I could do is rub it in but the fur is still very wet and I'm afraid not much made actual skin contact. Do I wash this off his skin and reapply?

I personally would just leave it alone and re-apply next month like normal. I'm sure a good amount made it to the skin, especially if you rubbed it in.

I have two little house terrorists (cats) living with me, so I can understand how these things happen!!!

Oh, I just know he was laughing. This was the cat that stays just at the edge of the couch between the couch and side table where Jordan can't reach him and just screeches to drive Jordan mad. He could get to where Jordan couldn't even see him but that wouldn't be any fun at all. I think he was looking for the perfect opportunity to pay mommy back at bringing this puppy into the nice, calm house. I'll waste an expensive vial of medication, that'll show 'em.

It should be fine, just avoid bathing your dog for at least 48 hours. If the ticks are really bad in your area, or if it doesn't seem to be working as well as usual, you could apply a second dose. There is a huge safety range on frontline. In the safety studies, they actually FED a large dose (equivalent to 29 times the topical dose) to cats with no ill side effects. The frontline should spread faster if the dog is more active.
And yes, cats can be naughty can't they!

I haven't seen fleas and it is supposed to be effective against fleas for 3 months but we have ticks around here pretty heavy this year. I had one on me and saw one on Jordan that wasn't attached yet. I am more careful with Summer because she is so furry and is hard to do a complete body check with her. I'll keep a good eye on him and do full checks to be on the safe side.

Thank goodness it didn't end up on the cat! Frontline is expensive, i would wait till the next application time. A small dosage is probably still somewhat effective.

Is it possible to part a Dobe's fur/ hair I have never been able to part Buddy's I have tried with combs, brushes, you name it I've tried it. You have allot of groom ing tools when you have had Bouvier's for 20 years. All I have been able to do is put the tip on the skin but it still goes on the hair.
I was at the store where I buy my dog food a couple of women came in that do rescue work with dogs. Over heard them talking about Bio -Spot is dangerous to use on Dobermans???? I'm almost out of Frontline plus thought I might try the Bio-Spot since they say it covers more like mosquitoes????

I recommend Frontline - much safer. The only species that seems to have a problem with it is rabbits. Most OTC tick products contain permethrins (organophosphate) which are effective, but have an increased risk of side effects (for ANY breed). As for their mosquito repellency..... it's a lot like our mosquito repellents or horse fly sprays.... have you ever had one that lasted anywhere near how long it says??? Most horse fly sprays have permethrins and are labeled to last "up to 7 days" or "up to 14 days" - RIGHT I have yet to see one of these that you don't need to reapply at least every other day. Permethrins are very toxic to cats, so if you have cats I would not recommend it (also should be cautious around small children). On a side note, most of the client dogs I've had come in who are using an OTC tick product (such as Hartz) have a greasy streak down their back for weeks. I have asked multiple owners if they just applied the tick preventative and all have said "oh, no we put that on last week (or a couple weeks ago or whatever)". Some of the OTC products are also less waterproof.
Checking your dog over carefully after they've been somewhere where's there are ticks and removing them right away can also help prevent tick-borne disease (lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, etc).

A friend of mine suggested some Zodiac product and when I looked it up on the internet I was not very interested in trying the product. I found a lot of bad information on it that it can cause skin reactions on the dogs and make other animals sick.

As far as parting the hair, I've always been able to do it somewhat and get it to kind of squeeze under the hair with minimal actually laying on top, this one application seemed to be completely on top of the hair and none in the hair or on the skin. The only thing I could think of is to rub it in as much as I could. I also noticed this time with it being on the hair and drying on there that it looks like dandruff on Jordan's shoulder blades. I've learned my lesson on this one. From now on it is either outside that I'll apply it or in a bathroom or closed bedroom without the cats able to taunt us and wasting an expensive vial. I'm taking this out of their cat treats for sure.
