| New Puppy Sudden Cough Hello To All,
We are NEW to the Doberman breed and purchased an 11 week old a week ago. We are experienced for 20 years with Rottweilers and my daughter decided on a Doberman this time instead. Yesterday the puppy "Gus" would bark then cough as though something was lodged in his throat, today it is getting a little worse or a bit more frequent. He has had his first round of shots from the breeder, food wise he is not a real anxious eater since we got him. Any thoughts on this would greatly be appreciated. |

| Yes a trip to the vet's is needed also if it is kennel cough you should let the breeder know as all the puppy's have probably got it and the adult's too

| | Alpha | Any dogs already in your home may be exposed to kennel cough if this new pup has it or is shedding it from a previous bout. |

| I made the appointment today! I have had dogs for over 20 years and never had the coughing. Our lab was vomiting this morning now. If Gus has kennel cough, as I have read from Dobemom2b, then our lab will have to be treated too. Ho Hum Puppydom! |

| In reading one of your other threads, it seems that you puppy came from a kennel of some size. The chances of it being kennel cough are probably good - I just hope it is not anything else. Kennel cough is usually not serious as long as the dogs are in good health. Let us know what the vet says.

Let us know what the vet says. | While it is normally from my understanding mostly an annoyance kennel cough can lead to pneumonia. Kennel cough is something I had never dealt with. When I got this pup he brought it in with him. My 80lb -never had a sick day in her life- german shepherd for some reason reacted really badly to it. She started within a few days with the coughing, which progressed to a productive wet cough, nose running which thickened, fever of 103, stopped eating, went from 80lbs to 67 in about 10 days. The vet put her on cephelexin to begin with because of the temp. After a week of it not doing any good he put her on cipro for 2 weeks. The cipro broke the fever in 3 days and she started eating on her own soon after. (much to my relief after having to syringe feed her).
My vet has no idea why this hit her so hard, it was so bad that he did x-rays because he was afraid it had progressed from tracheal bronchitis to pneumonia. Luckily the cipro kicked in before full fledged pneumonia set in. He has been her vet since I got her at 6mths old.
She has not picked up what ever has caused the pups loose stools which started about a half hour after I got him home (6hr drive from breeders). I count my blessings that she hasn't had this issue too. (all waste is shoveld up dirt and all, bagged and removed as soon as it hits the dirt)The last month has been a nightmare, and its not over... |

| Well the poor little guy has kennel cough, today the cough seems worse, but we started his meds, hopefully he eats better. Now to call the breeder, and yes the breeder has a larger number of dogs and pups. He is a hard pup to train also - hopefully it pertains to him feeling better soon. Thanks Dobemom2b and Velmadobe. Now I have to keep an eye on our Lab, I am not quite sure of the incubation period of kennel cough. I will have to ask the vet. I never had to deal with kennel cough and I have always had a dog, growing up and now. Thanks again. |
