Hi
Has anyone experienced anything like this? My 3 year old male Dobie developed huge swollen toe (4x normal size) on his left hind leg overnight. I immediately had it xrayed after examining it myself for bruising, splinters, etc, etc. The xray was perfectly normal. He does not protect or favor it. He appears to be in no pain.
The vet said to have it xrayed again in 4 weeks...that will be this coming Friday. When I went to the same vet to buy parrot food last week the vet tech asked how Oberon's toe was and I told her there was no change. She said that it wasn't uncommon for a large breed to develop a tumor and that amputating his toe would solve the problem.
Tufts School of Vet Medicine is about 2 hours drive. Should I make an appointment? Please help me. 3 years ago I lost my beloved Ulysses to lympho scarcoma. I don't want to think something wicked is coming my way again.
I think going to tufts might be a good idea. Good luck with that. I've had a dog with a broken toe and it was not as swollen as yours is.

Anything that swells up that much should be looked at more closely. I would take the 2 hour drive to be safe any day. Good luck and let us know how eveything turns out.
Isabelle had her front toe amputated in Feb. It was swollen & she had an ulcerated lesion (sp?) on it. She has melanoma. I would definately take the drive to tufts. If it is some kind of cancer the sooner you have it taken off the better. Isabelle is in a study through the univ of Wisconsin. She will have her last melanoma injection at the end of the month. She is doing well. She doesn't miss the toe & still runs and plays. She is 7. If you have any questions about it you are welcome to contact me.

Thanks for the reply. His xrays show no break and he doe not limp or in any way complain. Tufts requires a credit card for "just" a look, so I'm going to wait another week. I'm a teacher on vacation....

Yikes! I just read the other replies to my original question. Phoning Tufts right now. Thank you everyone.
Yes I too hope everything works out for you. Please let us know what you find out. Good luck, Tracy and Drago.
