please help! sudden large lump on dogs back??

so I went to the store for 45 minutes and my dog was fine when I left because I was rubbing his back. He was with my husband the whole time I was gone and he said nothing happened (like he didn't get hurt). When I came back and looked at my six month old pup there is a large lump on his back near the middle and to the side of his spine just a bit. It is not hard but feels like kind of a large blister. It does not seem to bother him as he is playing like normal. We have no idea what it could be but I am wicked worried. I don't think it could be a tumor because I really have never heard of a tumor growing that fast and I would think it would be more solid. Please does anyone have any ideas? He was at the dog park earlier today for anour two hours but again we didn't notice anything till just about 30 minutes ago.
I am most likely getting myself worked up over something simple but I can't help beimg worried about it especially when the vet is closed tomorrow. Again please anyone with an idea let me know I will try to get a good picture of it to post.

sounds like it could be a 'bad' bruising, maybe another dog jumped on his back with the front legs..........

do you know anything about vWD? your pup could be affected which means he may be prone to excessive bruising, bleeding into tissue, joints, etc.

dont keep squeezing or poking it, it will just make the condition worse.

now, it could be an abscess from an owie too! or a tender knot from a recent vaccination.

observe, call your Vet maybe, then in for an exam when the vet is open if the condition continues.

pictures?

no recent vacinations. quite possible someone roughed him up a bit at the park. we had some anti-inflamatory pills from when he was having problems with growing pains and gave him half a pill with a little food to help with any swelling but now I am wishing we hadn't because he seems really tired now and he wasn't like that before with the pills so I don't know. I will stop toughing it so that it doesn't make it worse I will up load two pics as soon as my laptop is up and running I am on my phone right now. I don't know if I should take him to vet hospital or wait it out it is tough because the closest vet hospital to me is Tufts and it is $250 to walk through the door alone and I had a bad experience there with my ferret. I have heard of VWD and thought my breeder said both sire and dam were clear I am digging through his paperwork now.

it is still there this morning but seems to have gotten a bit smaller. he is jumping around and acting 100% normal so i am not as concerned. my husband and i are keeping an eye on him and if it hasn't gone completely by monday we are going to take him to the vet to be safe.

Possibly a Seroma..(which is a fluid filled injury to the lower layer of skin) not a hematoma (which is like a blood blister). Neither life threatening unless he is a total 0 blood clotting factor....but you said he came from double clear parents...
good luck!

thanks i will have to look more into the Seroma and read up on it. just when we thought was getting better we just came back from grocery shopping and he was in his crate while were were gone and he now has a smaller lump now starting right on his spine a bit lower than the one before. he is now going to the vet for sure tomorrow, he still seems to be acting normal and they are not bothering him.
so frustrating since just about a month ago we got past a HOD scare which turned out just to be routine growing pains, i hope this turns out to be no big deal as well.

what size is your crate for Ryche? can he stand up and turn around without his back/spine bumping on the top?

thanks everyone for the suggestions and mostly for calmming me down so I don't upset my pup. Ryche has a wicked large crate with plenty of room so we did rule that out. The vet saw him today and didn't seem to concerned she said based on the fact that it is soft, he does not cry out when you touch it and he has no fever that it is most likely a hematoma or a seroma. She didn't asperate it but said to watch it for the week to see if it continutes to go down and if no significant changes to bring him back to have it asperated but that she didn't want to risk infection if not needed. So we will keep an eye on it and hope for the best. Thanks again!

So it has been a little over a week and the assumed seroma has not gotten bigger or smaller. Can anyone comment as to at home care I can do to help it. I have heard mention of hot compresses or cold ones but anyone who has firsthand advice would be appreciated.

an exam by your Vet would be a good idea. is that lump hard or soft now?

any other symptoms or changes in his behavior or anything else you have noticed before and after the lump appeared will help me suggest an alternative treatment which will not interfere with anything your Vet may suggest/advise in the future associated with the lump.

Your vet did say to bring him back if there was no change, I would do that if I were you, and get some specific instructions about how to proceed.

sorry took me awhile to get back on. The lump seems to have gotten smaller it is hard to tell when you see him everyday. I did call the vet and she didn't seemed concerned or want to see him, she said to give it a good two weeks. The only thing I question is that it is not as soft but harder now but then again if the fluid is going away and the skin going back I would assume it would compact the fluid that is left. I will give it till end of this week and then take him in for a follow up just to make sure the vet is still not worried. Any idea when left alone how long a seroma can take to go away?

My pup had a Seroma in the exact same place at 7 1/2 months of age. I think but don't know for sure, that she didn't know how tall she had gotten and was still trying to go under tables and hitting her back.
My vet took out 3 ounces of fluid and then taped her body to put pressure on the area and told me to keep her inactive. Four days later, he took out about an 1 1/2 ounces and retaped. That bandage stayed on for one week. She still had some fluid but it gradually went away.
