| OMG! What a DCM break through! PLEASE CROSS POST!
i'm speachless!
We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Kate Meurs of Washington State
University College of Veterinary Medicine has identified a genetic mutation
responsible for causing cardiomyopathy in Dobermans. A reasonably priced
test will be commercially available in about two weeks through the
Veterinary Cardiac Genetics Laboratory at WSU. (
<http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/deptsVCGL/> Veterinary Cardiac Genetics Laboratory of the College of Veterinary Medicine)
Dr. Meurs is coming to the National to present her findings and answer
questions. She is scheduled to speak on Monday, October 4th, 2010 at 10:00
a.m. in the Emerald Room. We will have the room for Q & A as well until 12
noon. Please spread the word so that everyone who wants to be there is made
aware of this development.
Dr. Meurs deserves many accolades for this long awaited accomplishment for
our breed!

| This was just posted this morning soooo I would think it wouldnt be on the list... I would think something this big someone will video tape it ?? I'm hopig so as I cant be there either...I' almost thought of flying there for the day ;-)
Yes there will be alot of tears shed from breeders , myself included. i'm still in shock!
if I hear anything else I will surely post it.
The only problem I have with this is, this test will probley say yes the dog is going to go on and get cardio BUT it wont beable to say at what age! so what do we do with those dogs..they could get it at 4 or 12? sure you wont breed them but still you wont know when they'll get it to beable to prepare for it. Just a thought?

Im fine with that, I just hope I dont have to live in fear wondering if this holter/echo is going to come back negative, or will the next? I already told Perrin that he has to live to be at least 21 (he is normally very obedient). I love this dog so stinkin' much.
Where was this info first posted?

| Can anyone confirm this? I got it on my club email list as well but it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere on Washington State's website, I guess that would make sense if she plans to announce it at the National. Praying to god this is true and not just a misinterpretation...

What was posted in the first post is exactly what the email says.

Dr. Meuers did not make this announcement herself, on her website or anywhere else that I can find, I just realized it was Kathy Davieds (who is also a vet) who announced this so I would think that is a reliable source. You always have to consider the source...

| I hope that we do not have to wait until after the national to hear her findings, it would be nice for those that are not attending to be able to read them. The sooner the information comes out the better I would say.

| | Ridn My Sparkle Pony!! | What a wonderful breakthrough for our beloved breed. I truly hope this is not a misinterpretation or joke. I can't wait to hear more about it and how/where to get the test. |

Even if it only tests for a genetic mutation, but if all the dogs are genetic carriers and I would think it would come up positive? I dunno, I'm not a geneticist but just wondering how it would work. Because its not like you could just stop breeding everyone...
Anyway, if this is indeed true, I do hope someone who attends the Nationals will be able to video record it and post it for everyone to see in its entirety. I'd love to hear what she has to say about it!

Anyway, if this is indeed true, I do hope someone who attends the Nationals will be able to video record it and post it for everyone to see in its entirety. I'd love to hear what she has to say about it! | But if its autosomal dominant (you only need to get one copy of the gene from one parent in order to be affected) then there could be clear individuals without lines being clear (just saying its a possibility). Its likely far more complicated than what I'm saying, BUT through crossing over in prophase I, meiosis I the mutated gene wouldn't show up in every zygote. So, on this very basic level two parents affected by an autosomal dominate mutation could still produce clear offspring, assuming both only have 1 copy of the mutation. Every individual offspring would have a 25% chance of being clear of the mutation when coming from 2 affected parents who are heterozygous for the mutation.
ETA...Like I said, I'm just thinking "aloud" here going on very basic genetics. I'm sure its more complex than what I'm musing.
ETA #2...Still thinking...if polygenes are involved that could explain the reason for variation in expression of the mutation; why some dogs develop symptoms at 2 and others at 9. (Polygenes are multiple genes involved in the expression of another gene that affect the phenotypic - physical/observable - expression of said gene. One example would be eye color. Polygenes are invovled in eye color which is why two people can both have blue eyes but they are different shades/hues of blue. Hair color is another example and so on.)
