Swollen Anal Gland - Pictures!

When my husband and I woke up this morning, we found Austen with a swollen right anal gland. It looks like a half a golf ball, basically. We're taking him to the vet tomorrow, but has anyone dealt with swollen anal glands before? I've been researching, but I would prefer some first hand experience with them.

My girl did, but not as bad. Her's were infected pretty good and when they cleaned them out it was pretty foul smelling (more so than usual) and a really interesting color. When done, she let out a huge sigh, but was not happy to have the animax squirted back in there twice per week for 3 weeks.

Since then she has had hers expressed numerous times and does try to do it herself on the carpet (ick).

I've never heard of it in the males, but I do know it is possible.

Hope your boy gets some relief soon!

I used hot compresses on a dog I had years ago to help open for drainage.

I tried expressing it a few times, but nothing came out. It's a little firm and not giving much to the touch. I guess they'll have to lance it tomorrow.

And, thanks! I hope he gets some relief soon, too - even though he doesn't seem to be in pain. Was your girl in pain?

I squeeze and relieve my Doxie's anal glands every time we bathe him. About every two wks. If I do not he scoots on the rug. It is not difficult to do. It does have an awful smell and can be in color from yellow to brown to almost black. This also stops a lot of the licking behavior (back there) that you get. You can feel the glands on either side of the anus. I hold up the tail and put and thumb in one side and the forefinger on the other and squeeze. Now, I am not telling you to do this. I think he needs to see a vet. BUT expressing the glands on a regular basis may or may not stop what you are seeing. I know my doxie is happier when I care for this area.....Good luck and let us know.

I hate to admit that, since I've never had any anal gland problems in any of my dogs, (knock on wood) I didn't really know what they're for or why they are there. After a quick google, I found this simple to read explanation.

My male had this a while back, and it took a few months ot get rid of. I would expressthem internally, Yes I got the rubber glove out. The material that I was expressing was thick with blood. We tried 2 month round of cephalexin and it didn't work so we ended up with another antibiotic. Get it under control before it get worse. I have seen dogs get it on a continous basis and it smells horrible. It can be painful, and after several, infections my vet recommends having them removed. They also can be allergy related. I know from my experiance when Titan and Bet would have bad allergies they would also get infected anal glands.

I hope your baby get better soon.

Jed the hound had an impacted anal gland. It was VERY painful for him and extremely hard for the vet to express. I would definitely have the vet do the expression for this one.
After that, sometimes a diet higher in fibre can help.

It has beern my experience that if your dog does not have a problem with their anal glands, it is best to leave them alone. I took a dog to have it groomed and they expressed his anal glands and after that, he had problems he had never had before. Ever since then, I do not let anyone, including my vet, express anal glands. I go by the old adage if it ain't broke don't fix it. No problems since then,

I honestly never thought of it that way...but you make a valid point. Thanks for the insight.

Vet update:

The swelling actually isn't his anal gland. It's being caused by something else, which at this point, we're unsure of what that is. The vet is certain it's from some sort of bite, because when lancing the area, a lot of serum came out. She looked at the serum under a slide and found a lot white blood cells present. So, we've got him on Simplicef and Prednisone for the next week. If it hasn't gone done by the week's end, then we'll have to pursue another avenue.

She was in pain, but when they were so infected she didn't scoot so much.

Hopefully the vet can fix it for him - it has to at least feel uncomfortable!

What was the final determination of what was wrong with your Doberman? Our Doberman has had a lot of issues this last week, and the vet had no answer. We lost our last Doberman to cancer, and am very concerned, especially with no straight answer from our vet. Please advise us what came of yours.Thank you.

You might add pumpkin puree(not pie filler) or pureed sweet potato to her diet. Start with a tablespoon. It adds fiber which helps express anal glands. My Dobes never had anal gland issues but some dogs are more sensitive when you change their food too quickly or some tend to have a more "peanut butter" type of anal gland secretions which tend to get impacted more.

Hope she feels better soon.
