Histiocytoma

I noticed this small scab on Rosco's leg about one or two months ago and I figured that he was just nipping at his leg and went too far. It healed up, but it didn't go away. It just turned white and got hard. I then noticed a few weeks later he had what looked like a pimple on his butt. So I took him to the Vet and she almost immediately diagnosed it as Histiocytoma. She said it's common with large breed dogs and that they are most likely benign. She said that, if I wanted to, that when we take him to be neutered next month they would remove them and send them for a biopsy just to be sure. I am definitely going to do this, but i was wondering if anyone else has had these. I was also wondering if this is like a bad gene thing that could lead to something else. Going to call the breeder tomorrow to see if her other dogs experienced this, but was just wondering what you all thought...thanks.

I just went through the same thing. I brought Havoc in for a UTI check and he had a really hard scab thing on his elbow. Vet said it was most likely a histio and she could biospy or we could wait. She suggested waiting. It went away just fine. Of course 2 days after the appt, he got a red bump under his chin which looked just like a histio if you google. She suggested giving it 2-3 months UNLESS it drastically grows, get worse. He got it about 12/30 and it went away a few days ago. Simple histiocytoma.

I had a Vizsla with cutaneous lymphoma (lump/bump) so it's HARD for me to not to rush to biopsy everything. My vet was very confident it would go away and he'd be fine and it is. He just turned a year if age helps.

Baron developed one on his left front leg where is dew claw was. Vet removed it because of where it is was. No problems. Both his cousins had one at different spots and they were removed with no problems either. When he is being neutered, good time to do it.

I just had one removed from my girl and decided to spay her at the same time. Hers was a little bump on her chest one day and five days later it was almost the size of a dime. They look very much like a mast cell which is cancerous, so I took no chances, it was removed and biopsied and was thankfully benign. They say it is not a genetic thing and is common in younger dogs. I'm sure everything will be fine, Good Luck.

Histos are pretty common in young or older dogs. They are benign and usually go away on their own in a few months. They are immune related and get get rather unsightly in the meantime. Drago got a real large one on his face by his left nostril. I treated it with Dr. Sholl's Freeze away wart remover. Freezing it created a disturbance in the tissue and then it began healing like it was a wound. It left no scar at all on his lovely face.

Rosco is Black and Tan. I do have pictures, but having some computer problems and haven't had a chance to post any new ones. The bumps have pretty much gone away except for the original one. Talked to the breeder and she verified that these are common and that her other dogs have had them before. He gets neuterd on the 16th, so I think I'll just have them removed then. Thanks for all your help!
