| POLL: How much fish oil do you give your dog? I have read many threads on coats and most just advise others to give fish oil. I have seen some people give well over 4,000mg's daily and some that just give their dog 500mg daily. I know every dog is different but I was just curious to see how much fish everyone gives their dog daily and if their is such thing as "too much" fish oil on a daily basis. Thanks!

rj,
There is definitely such a thing as too much fish oil--your first clue would usually be a dandy case of diarrhea in the dog.l
Very high dosages of fish oil may be prescribed by vets for specific reasons but most dogs do very well on 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day. And most dogs tolerate that quantity very well.
If you are thinking about giving mega-doses of anything (supplements--OTC products) I'd think it wise to talk to your vet before starting to do so. This is particularly important if the dog is being medicated for anything else--some supplements, even things like fish oil can have unfortunately interactions with prescription drugs. |

| I purchased 1000mg capsules, but one a day gave my girl very loose stools, so I give it every other day until these are gone, then I will go down to 500mg. |

| I feed raw so I don't add fish oil daily. I do give them whole fish in their diet and occasionally they get salmon oil. |

| With the super dry weather we have been having, Hara came up with the worse case of dandruff she has ever had. The vet told me to give her a bath with selsun blue, and give her 1/2 teaspoon of canola oil and 1000 mg of fish oil daily for her weight level. He stated that buying bottles of cheaper brand OTC fish oil and giving 1000mg daily would be about perfect since the cheaper variety will only be absorbed at a rate of about 40%. He made it pretty clear we would not want to give much more than 1000mg. It has been less than a week and the dandruff is completely cleared up. |

| I have heard 1,000-2,000. I have been using 1,000 (actually I think it might be 1,100).
I also feed occasional raw fish but not often enough for it to "count." I wish I could find those darn frozen smelts that someone else here buys at their local store.... but I digress...
It works wonders for dry skin! Noticeable difference in my aging GSD's dry skin - I've used it ever since. |

| Our bottle of fish oil says to give 1.5 tsp. per day for a dog Ziggy's size. I think I may be giving more than that, so I need to start measuring... 1.5 tsp doesn't seem like much at all, but the fish oil I bought is very high in DPA/EHA. Seapet

| | Doberman Slave | We use the 500 mg capsules from Costco. Each dog gets one twice a day, so 1000 mg per day, per dog. I just throw them in their food and they eat them. We've never had dry skin or any coat problems, but I believe it is also a good supplement for cardio health.

| Fish oils differ greatly on the amount of EPA/DHA they contain. It is important to know these quantities rather than just the total mg of fish oil.
Oops. Just realized this is a 4 year old thread. Not sure how it showed up. Ill leave it anyway

| We feed raw and add sardines a couple times a week. They also get a 1000 mg of a 3, 6, 9 for general nutrition (the ratio is 2:1:1) and then add 3500 mg omega 3 for hopeful cardio health daily. Supplements are Nordic Naturals. Vitamin E , 400 mg every other day. We worked up to the dose of omega 3, but poop is excellent. Don’t know if it will make a lick of beans in the long run, but we are trying . |
