Heat questions...

Josie started her heat today and i just had a few questions since i've never dealt with this before...

How long do dobes normally bleed? I was really wanting to take her to nationals with me, so i pray she'll be done before then.

Will i be able to walk her, or will dogs be going crazy?

I just put a regular pad in her diaper...is this what you guys do?

And do you leave her diaper on in the crate, or should i take it off?

And for kicks, here she is...

LMFAO!!! That is an amazing picture LOL

When Kleo went into heat I didn't really do anything different except make sure no male dogs around her were being fixated towards her. I still took her to walks normally and she was a real bitch if some other dog tried to mess with her lol.

She bled for about a week and a half I believe (been too long for me to remember now ) but it's not that bad of an experience...at least imo.

Good luck with it!!

The *average* heat period last about 3 weeks, since that's just an average, this can vary by bitch. Frequently when the bitch reaches the time she's in standing heat (the time she's actually fertile) the discharge will change color, sometimes almost to a straw color.

I've always just used a regular mini pad inside the sexy pants.

My dogs are rarely crated after they're housebroken and past the destructo stage. But I doubt I'd leave the pants on one when they were crated-guess it would depend on whether I trusted that particular dog to leave the pants alone or not.

I would NOT be walking a bitch in season around my neighborhood, way too much potential for a hassle, IMO.

You'll be able to walk her at the National. With that many dobermans around, I'm sure she won't be the only bitch in heat, and you wouldn't have to worry about stray dogs as much.

When I've had a bitch in season at a show, I do try to keep them away from ringside as much as possible..crating them until the last minute, getting them out of the crate and at the ring gate only right before their class is starting. This is especially true if they're in standing heat. I think it's just a courtesy thing.

I'll be honest, tho..I probably wouldn't bring a bitch in season to the National if she wasn't entered. Just too many complications for me.

Thanks for all the info, MD!

So i'll know she's done when there's no discharge?

Still crossing my fingers she'll be done shortly.

Her season will last about 3 weeks. They are usually fertile around day 10 or 11, so she'll be in "standing heat" during Nationals most likely! All the boys will want to get to know her!

Do NOT bring her near obedience nor agility venues!!!!! Conformation dogs do show when in season but you are not allowed to show a bitch in heat in obedience nor agility. Can you imagine a sit stay gone wrong with some mixed breed breeding?

If she were mine, I'd leave her at home, or crate her in a hotel room and enjoy the show yourself. I always leave the pants and pad off when crated.... I just use it on the girls when supervised running around the house.

**Darn...I think she and Wally would have had fun playing. Well, Wally would LOVE to meet her now!! (he does not even lift his leg yet, and I am trying to keep him in the dark as long as possible....my little man!)

Don't count on it being done when there's no discharge. When the discharge goes from bloody to very light colored, and her vulva shrinks a bit she will be fertile. You have about 5 days that she can get preggers since semen can live up to 3 days. They don't all ovulate like clockwork either. Some can early and others later.
I HATE seasons, so I feel your pain. My Aubrey used to rip the pad out of her panties and shred it. When I crated her I took the panties off. Wire crate + barking = blood all over the walls. It's so hard to win!

I believe 21 days is usually the norm. I always started counting at the first sight of discharge.

I agree, the last thing I want is to draw any more attention to my girl and the yard/home from roaming intact male dogs, which will come out of the woodwork at times. They will jump/dig/destroy fences and can and will follow that scent straight back to the source. Taking an intact bitch on a walk around makes no common sense to me at least.

Sorry for the ignorance. Never had a dog in heat, or been around one...didn't know. I was just making sure because that's quite a long time to go without a walk, since she's used to a few miles a day.

I used to stuff my girl in the car and walk at a park nearby....NOT a dog park but a regular people park. I'd do some laps around the outside of baseball fields, etc and then drive home. That way any scent did not track back to my house. Just keep an eagle eye out for any dogs before you take her out of the car!

Fresh semen can actually live and potentially fertilize for up to ~ 6 days or so.

Ideal breeding is ~ 2-3 days after ovulation (since the egg is not mature when ovulated). What day bitches ovulate can really vary from early in the cycle to very late in the cycle and can even vary from heat cycle to heat cycle on the same bitch.
