Eddie sometimes get this on his chin. My previous dobe and my fathers also had something similar. Sometimes they bleed not bad but just a little bit like when he rests his hid on his pillow Ill see little blood stains from it. Is this something I should have a vet look at? Has anyones dobes had anything similar? He eats from stainless steel bowl raised

Owch! I've never seen chin acne that severe. I would take him in to see the vet; he probably needs to be on antibiotics. Make sure you wash his food and water bowls daily. If you scrub his chin with medical scrub or diluted Listerine after meals it should help keep it clear in the future. Good luck!

Make sure you feed him from stainless or ceramic bowls (not plastic ones). The inner portion of a plastic dish can irritate the skin when it wears down some.

Wipe his chin after every meal. You can use just a paper towel with some drying agent on it, even a Stridex pad will help keep these bumps from getting so bad. Some dogs just end up with more residue from meals on their chins for some reason.

Those bumps are pretty bad looking. At this point I'd get him to the vet for for some antibiotics, medicated cream of some sort. May be a staph infection at this point?

well his dishes are cleaned every day, but he is a sloppy eater, so lately I have been washing him up now after meals. Ill probably have him at the vet this weekend, My vet tech said to try witch hazel first and clean it 3 times a day and if it doesnt clear up after a week then take him for antibiotics.

Seems that if your pup had them when they were very young they will re occur at puberty and times of stress. Just try and keep the chin as clean and dry as possible without rubbing the sores too much. Sometimes a zinc supplement or a cream containing zinc will help.

Cinnia has this problem as well. We had to wash her chin with antibacterial soap and thein put a antibiotic mask on it till it cleared. After it cleared the vet had us use strydex (over ther counter for humans) for sensitive skin on her twice a day and she has had no problems since. Good luck!

OMG Titan had this on his chin and yes he too scratched it bloody at times. I guess you could say it is acne, I got an acne cream for it and it cleared it all up. I used "OXY spot treatment maximum" its got 10% benzoyl peroxide and comes in a little .65 oz tube. It came highly recommended by the vet. it worked too.

Whenever Titan's chin started bleeding I applied a liquid bandaid solution called "New Skin". I warn you though, it does sting a bit and you have to keep them still till it dries (just a few minutes). Works like a charm!

Good luck, hope this helps!

My 9 month old is getting treated for a case not quite that bad. The vet prescribed Cipro 500 mg twice daily, Pyoben medicated wash daily, and Animax cream (nystatin-neomycin-thiostrepton-triamcinolone) twice daily. I used a stainless steel bowl already. His acne went from a few zits to giant pustular abcesses within 2 weeks after switching his food. I'm thinking maybe sensitivity to the new food? Anyway, it has reduced by half after only 4 days of treatment. You should definitely see your vet.

That case of chin acne is bad enough, that, as other people have said, he should be seen by a vet--he should probably be on a round of antibiotics.

This problem seems to be more prevalent in some lines that others but the answer is usually to keep the chin very clean and dry. Wash and disinfect all dishes on a per meal basis and water bowls on a daily basis. Clean the dogs chin after each meal. Pyoben gel works very well on areas that have only one or two bumps or scabby areas. Any of the cleaners for human acne treatment (the OTC ones) can be used as a prevention.

Don't just let it go though--continued infections will cause thickening of the skin and scarring and seem to end up with a dog who gets more infections in the area.

No others that I am aware of report acne. My old Dane had it pretty bad though. 1. stainless steel or ceramic bowls (no plasitc). 2. I am very anti-overuse of antibiotics. This is a young, otherwise healthy Doberman. Some scrub (or medicated pyoben shampoo) and drying should do the trick.

Eli had it. Not that badly but I took him to the vet. He got an antibiotic cream for his chin. The vet said I should wash all toys daily...yeah right. I did wash them weekly though but in the end it turned out to be the raw knuckle and marrow bones that were causing the problem. I now boil them, then soak the bones in apple cider vinegar and then rinse. This worked for us.

Strongly agree with the over use of antibiotics. I have used witch hazel with good results on my male. Keep the chin clean and the food bowls washed.

I clean his chin right after every meal.

Most of my males had "acne" on their chins. In each case, our vet suggested OTC acne preparation (benzoyl peroxide) if my spelling is correct. I too avoided antibiotics if at all possible...bigdobe

Gypsy gets this sometimes. My vet said it was from water staying on her chin too long? Either way we just made sure it stayed dry and put antibiotic ointment on it a few times a day and its all clear now.

Ah yes yes yes.. Ruger gets this every once in a while. Here are some things that make sure that your pup does NOT continue to get these:

1. Make sure your using a stainless steel food bowl, and wash it well after every meal.
2. Do not use wet food.

Ruger has these bad, but someone on DT told me these 2 things, and they went away. I used to feed a semi-wet food, switched to hard food, the dog likes it no matter what, and he doesn't have bloody pimples anymore!

Good luck!

Thanks all for posting suggestions. I was actually gonna take Max to the vet for the same thing. Although his is not that severe (thank goodness), but he does have a lot of them and they do bleed. I will try the witch hazel for a while and see if it works before taking him to the vet.
