Friend's dog was bitten by a raccoon!

Hey there,
My friend's aussie Althea was in a fight with a raccoon and has a cut on her tongue. She had rabies boosted this February. My friend is out working on a farm in the boonies and called me for advice, but I have no clue. I said she should be concerned about infection, but since she just boosted rabies she should be ok in that arena...?

Not sure of any other disease concerns she should have? I think she should take her in anyway even though she doesn't have a local vet (is working on this farm just for the summer) for at least antibiotics.

Vet folks?

Thanks!

Was this during the day, or when it was getting dark?

Was your friend able to capture/kill the raccoon?

Sorry, but I would be wanting its head sent off.

always a vet when you beloved pet gets bit by a wild animal. If your friend does not want to do an evening e-vet visit then she should wash and flush the area, keep it clean and clear of debris, and prevent it from ripping depending on how bad the bite marks are. But have her go t the vet. Right away in the morning. Wild animal bites can get infected very fast.

Your friends aussie should be ok since she got a rabies booster in Feb. Hope she didn't come in contact with the raccoon she could be in danger of contacting rabies. I do not think there is anything else to worry about. I haven't heard of anything. Glad her dog was vaccinated against rabies.

She needs to contact a veterinarian. It doesn't matter when her last booster was, typically in every state she NEEDS to get this dog boostered.

Was this raccoon out during the day, or did this occur during dusk/night?

Tell her this dog needs to get to the veterinarian.

OK I actually spoke with her last night- I posted this after hearing a voicemail from her.

This happened at night - she was walking from the main house to her own little cabin... Thea was off leash but never goes far. I'm sure she came across a raccoon stealing some food off of one of the plots. She said that this happened Friday night, actually, and that her tongue is already healing up fine. She thinks that Thea may have bitten her own tongue? She doesn't see any bite marks anywhere else, just the one-inch slit on her tongue. Acting, eating, drinking like nothing happened.

Because she's acting fine she doesn't think she's going to take her in because it's difficult for her to get off the farm (she works 6 days/week right now). I've still told her she should take her in... I will reiterate this advice after reading these replies. We shall see.

Thanks so much for your input!

I had (sitll allive he just resides with my ex husband) an ex-feral (long story) cat that would not reside inside- he was attacked by a raccoon or opossum. He had severe injuries requiring surgury and staples. But nontheless, my vet said if it had just been a scratch, he still would have needed vet attention and antibiotics. He ended up with a nasty infection, btw. Racoons can carry nasty bugs- they dig through trash.

Kim brings up a good point, and you answered- if the raccoon is out close to the house stealing trash, she may need to set up traps. We had raccoons that someone in the neighborhood had to have been feeding. I was outside, and one came up to me (within 6 inches of me, looked at me, and proceeded to saunter to my garage and hop into the window.) They would take the lids off of our trash cans and eat out of them while staring at us through the back door. They became a huge nuisance until we trapped them and sent them off with animal control. Whatever got my cat really got him good- he came home with a huge gash in his stomach- he had lost weight and I don't know how he dragged himself home.

People just kill me feeding wildlife. Everyone needs wild racoons running around not afraid of people.
I may feed something but it will never know where the food comes from. It is really not even wise to feed something as it gets the nature out of balance.

Tell her if her dog has tangled with a coon, it needs to go to the vet!!!

Well, all you can do is urge her to get the dog boostered, Bean.

Sometimes, we just can't control what our friends and family do with their pets.

The fact that it happened at night is a tiny bit less worrisome than a 'coon out wandering in the daylight, at least.
