My 14 year old Doberman is having trouble getting off and on her bed, which is about 15cm off the ground. She is having a problem with her hind leg and dont know if its just arthritis.I really am hoping that it isnt Degenerative Myelopathy disease.I am planing to take her to the vet soon, but wondering if anyone has any advice for me on what to do.
It could be a lot of things beside degenerative myelopaty. Crucate ligament tear. Arthritis in the hip or knee. I thought that degenerative myelopathy, like degenerative disc disease usually affected both hind legs not just one.
Your vet should be able to gve you an idea what is happeing--good luck
Glucosamine/msm/chondroitin could certainly help. I use glycoflex for both of mine- 10yo and 5yo but there are other options as well. I also supplement fish oil.
Your 14 year old dobe is having trouble getting off the bed. I envy and look forward to being in your situation one day!
Beside what a Vet would advise , i would eliminate as much shock that the joints would absorb from getting up and down from the bed. Using cushion, ramp, steps or gentle hand up and down.
Please keep us posted. Can you put a bed right on the floor for her? I would definitely want some veterinary input. There are supplements that can help if it is arthritis/aging. As others have said, a good glucosamine/chondrotin supplement (I have used both Dasuquin and Glycoflex III) is great, but there is also the injectable Adequan which is much stronger and has had great results. Your vet should be able to give you good advice once you know the cause.
I spotted a lump on her foot then her toe is getting swollen affecting her.Now i realised what was causing her walking problems. For sometime she has also being licking her foot which probably caused the lump.I also want to know if a vet would not operate on a dog if it is too old.I am really worried about her now because my dad wants to put her down. Now i am in a situation where i cant do anything.I hope her toe isnt caused by cancer.
Does anyone know if dog goes for a checkup at the vet and your told that your dog has a serious condition will they not allow you to take your dog home. Will they put your dog to sleep the same time.
I don’t believe an ethical vet can do anything without your permission. Though if the dog is obviously really neglected I don’t know what they can do in that case.
They can just advise you strongly about the decision they would make, but if you make another decision, she’s your dog. If your dad actually owns the dog and insists on her being put to sleep, you may not have much choice.
Addition--I gather if the vet thinks the dog is abandoned or is critically injured (hit by a car, etc.) and the owner can’t be found or a non-owner brings him in, the person bringing him in can give the vet permission to euthanize him.
But if you, the owner, bring him in for treatment, I don’t believe they can just seize your dog, unless, in their mind, they think the dog is suffering terribly and will not recover. Even then, they have a responsibility to inform you of what your choices are. If the owner is not there to give consent, they should make as much effort as possible to contact him for permission.
It may depend on where you live and what the laws are about ethical vet practice.
